Is everything enabled in the 'Elan Pointing Device' which on my notebook is located in the 'Show Hidden Icons' at the bottom right of the desktop near the time & date.

I encountered this problem but with the synaptics pointer device...in the end I got a wireless mouse and now live without the hassle...not a solution to the actual problem itself but it has enabled me to use my laptop hassle free...the pointer device was re-installed etc time and again,to no avail.
