Good day!

I need to upgrade my laptop but I'm having a bit of trouble concerning with the "needs-to-be-the-same-make" or "dual channel issues," you know stuff like that. I haven't opened the laptop's back cover yet but the seller said one of the ram slots has a chip soldered in it already, with its uh properties below from CPU-Z.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DIMM #                1
    SMBus address        0x51
    Memory type        DDR4
    Module format        SO-DIMM
    Module Manufacturer(ID)    SK Hynix (AD00000000000000000000)
SDRAM Manufacturer (ID)    SK Hynix (AD00000000000000000000)
    Size            4096 MBytes
    Max bandwidth        DDR4-2666 (1333 MHz)
    Part number        HMA851S6JJR6N-VK
    Serial number        82E4ADC2
    Manufacturing date    Week 25/Year 19
    Nominal Voltage        1.20 Volts
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At first I was planning to add a 4 GB DDR4 2400 MHz chip but task manager says I'm allowed to utilize only 3.4 gb of my current ram; apparently 573 MB is hardware reserved, which I don't know for what, since AMD's new to me and I've never had this hardware reserved thingy with Intel stuff.

Now I'm planning to plug in an 8 GB version of the DDR4 2400 MHz chip, will it be okay? Stuff about dual channeling (like flex mode for AMD) and all. I've read articles that recommended I should plug in another "same make, same size, etc." ram chip. What do you guys think?

Hi! Thanks for the speedy reply.

The seller mentioned there's another free RAM slot, just that one slot is occupied already and it's soldered shut. It also seems that my motherboard only allows up to 2400 MHz, can I snap in a 2400 MHz RAM chip (of any size and brand? not just 4 GB) instead of a 2666 MHz one?

    I appreciate the help!
    Hi,
Yes, you can install up to 16GB in that slot, avoid any modules especially made for other brand laptops.

    Hi,
You need to open the back cover and check whether you have 2 slots, if you have two slots, you can upgrade the memory up to 32GB, as you already have a 2666MHz module you can upgrade with another same speed module of same size but it may down clock to 2400MHz.
You can check the speed of the current module in Task manager, if it show as 2666MHz, you can install another 2666MHz module.
There will be some of the memory allocated to Hardware reserved in all laptops but the amount may vary according to the system.

Thanks for answering my question! Just to sum it all up:
    • I can install a 2400 MHz chip in the other slot, not just a 2666 MHz chip.
    • I can install up to 16 GB in the free slot, as long as it's not made especially for other brands. Does this mean I can install *all* of the (I don't know how to put this) general brands like Kingston and Corsair?
    • Pairing my existing 4 GB with an 8 GB won't blow up my system.
Are all of these correct? I just need another "thumbs up" from you to make sure I got everything right. Cheers!

Haha, it's no problem at all! I still haven't bought a stick due to the lockdown so your "yes" is very helpful. Thank you!
