Can't boot Ubuntu after Security Update

I have an Acer Aspire 5 (Model # A515-43-R19L), with an AMD Ryzen 3 3200u CPU. I'm trying to set it up with Linux.

I installed Xubuntu 19.10 without issue. It was running perfectly. I was able to save files, shutdown and restart without issue- until I updated the system. These are the security updates. After this, I was no longer able to fully boot up the system.

Subsequent reboots give me errors like this:

I've transcribed it below:
---------------------------------------------------------------
[ 0.933356] pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: Unable to write to IOMMU perf counter.
/dev/nvme0n1p2 contains a file system with errors, check forced.
Inode 4325409 seems to contain garbage.

/dev/nvme0n1p2: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
(i.e., without -a or -p options)
fsck excited with status code 4
The root filesystem on /dev/nvme0n1p2 requires a manual fsck

BusyBox v1.27.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.27.2-2ubuntu3.2) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs) _
---------------------------------------------------------------

I ran fsck manually after this, which said the system was "clean".
I restarted and again I have the system unable to boot and telling me that all CPU cores are in "soft lockup".

So I tried installing Xubuntu 18.04 instead, which is a Long Term Release. But the pattern is the same- It installs and runs fine, but after installing the subsequent Security Updates it gives me the errors above.

I've also tried other Linux distros and they either have the same or other issues.

I thought about updating the BIOS/firmware, but I see this model can't flash the BIOS from a flash drive alone and its copy of Windows doesn't exist any more so I can execute the BIOS update (which may not even solve the issue anyway) via Windows.

The system is UEFI only. I have turned off Fast boot and Secure boot. SATA is in AHCI mode.
The installed Linux system does show up in the BIOS/firmware menu.

I am grateful for any help on this.

first things first, what was the update?  And if the xfce desktop is your thing, might be worth trying mx linux (very slick xfce on a debian base).
  • Is secureboot disabled by any chance?

They are the latest combined Security Updates for Ubuntu.
I actually did try MX Linux, but I couldn't even get it boot it properly.

Although I prefer and am familiar with Ubuntu/Xubuntu, I'll be happy with any decent distro that works properly.
Is secureboot disabled by any chance?
    Yes it is.

I am not using Windows. I deleted Windows. I am talking about Linux.

Debian has been my go-to distribution for several years, since I have several older computers. Recently, I ordered the same exact Acer model, and I'm very happy with the laptop, the support from Acer, and the support from Amazon.

I have had similar experience as you with every Debian-based distribution that I've tried: latest versions of Debian, Ubuntu, LinuxMint, and MX. The Debian Live versions do not run at all. After installation, the GRUB menu boots, but the system then freezes before the desktop environment starts. The Live versions of Ubuntu and LinuxMint run cleanly, but after installing the systems, I also got the soft lock errors you experienced.

I suspect the problem is that Debian uses open-source graphics drivers rather than AMD's proprietary drivers. Those drivers are available on the non-free channel of the Debian repository: The package is: firmware-amd-graphics. They are also available on the Debian Live + non-free iso downloads.

While the Debian installer calls for the firmware drivers for your WiFi module, it doesn't seem to install the AMD drivers. It's possible to manually install the drivers using the GRUB Recovery root prompt, but I have no idea how to reconfigure the laptop to use them. I would love to get Debian to work, but after two weeks of trying, I conceded defeat. If you figure out a way to make it work let me know.

Let me save you a lot of the frustration that I've experienced trying to get Debian to work: For Fedora 31 and OpenSUSE 15.1, the Live versions and installed systems will run cleanly on your A515. Fedora installs with the Gnome desktop. The OpenSUSE standard installation is either KDE or Gnome. But there is also an option to install a minimal system, then install XFCE, LXDE LXQt, Enlightenment, or MATE. I opted to install OpenSUSE with the Gnome desktop so I can't offer any advice on installing the other desktops.

OpenSUSE is becoming more impressive the more I use it. It has its own quirks of course, and the repositories don't have quite as many packages as Debian, but there is an active user group, forums, and package contributions from other users. So far it's run solid without any errors, freezes or crashes.

  • I don't have much experience with linux, but maybe this link can help: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-prorad-lin-18-20
