Acer Swift 3 SF314-57 - Is there any software to control the backlit keyboard?

I know this question was asked many times, but is it really that difficult for Acer to create a small program to control keyboard backlit? Having backlit timeout and not being able to control the duration of that timeout or not having a way to turn on backlit for example by touching the touchpad is really unclear. Trying to find a key at night to turn on backlit is plain stupid. For example on my Dell laptop all I need do to is just touch the touchpad and backlit is on right away. Having that function on Acer Swift 3, and not only on that model, would be a great deal for lots of users. Acer explains this to us that this is power saving function to meet requirements of energy star, but please give us customers a way to control it. My model: Acer Swift 3 i5-1035G1/8GB/512GB, SF314-57, NX.HJFEP.003

    Good Morning kidp !

The parameters are imposed for legal use of Energy Star.
Changing these parameters generates legal issues and depending on the internal controllers can lead to a decrease in the useful battery life and energy issues.

What legal issues? It should be up to me whether I want to change these settings or not. By default let it be this 30 sec timeout, then it's fine with Energy Star, but if I want to decrease battery life by letting longer backlit duration it should be up to me. Simple disclaimer during installation of such controlling program would do.
What is more, it is not how long you let the keyboard being lit, it is how you control it. As I mentioned, why not add function to switch on backlit with touchpad movement?

In fact it is up to the project developer to offer access or not.
In that case, access is not provided.

  • The only possibility I see, would be to add this function to acer quick access and bios. In the bios, is there a function similar to this?

Of course there is not. This option applies only to certain models: Aspire T7000, Aspire A715-72G, Predator PH315-51, Aspire A717-72G, Nitro AN515-52, Nitro AN515-53, Predator PH317-52, Nitro AN515-42. And it only allows to turn backlit off after 30 seconds. No turn on with touchpad movement or no change of timeout duration.
It is a pity Acer doesn't allow users to control such a simple function as backlit keyboard in all models. I don't want to change my favourite brand to someone else. I wish Acer would be more helpful.

Control depends on the legal issues of use, application implementation and in some cases hardware alteration.
Broadly speaking, for pre-existing models, it is not viable.

Acer managed to put option to disable backlit timeout into bios of some models after they were released. MaClane do you really think it would be so hard to put at least that option in other models such as Swift 3? Good example is NitroSense program which allows you to control some of the laptops functions including disabling backlit timeout (that will have to be implemented in bios as well).

I do not believe it is a matter of difficulty, but of investment and viability.
If you really need it and find it unnecessary, I advise you to contact Acer support and development directly.

MaClane, would you please be so kind and provide me an Acer support and development email, because my skills to find such are rather weak.

However, I don't like the back-light when working at night, I would like to have the ability to turn it off on my new Swift 3, how could I do this? Thanks
  • @newsamOn the battery, it will always shut down every 30 seconds.
