Recently, pressing the power button on my Aspire ETHOS 8951G would cause the power switch to light for 1 second, then go out, and the laptop remains off... I would have to press it several times to get it to boot. Now, it's a no-start. Power supply is good, connection to power port is good, possible battery life issue?

What happens when you run on the power supply only, no battery installed? Jack E/NJ

The 8-cell Li-ion pack in the 8951G is embedded, but removal of the service door on the bottom gives you access to the packs' connector to the motherboard -- I pulled the connector, and tried to power-up -- same thing, button lights for 1-second, then dark.

Does the same thing happen on the battery only, no charger? Jack E/NJ

Yes, on battery only, on adapter only, with both... Perhaps I had the laptop too close to my Surface PRO4 and the Acer got upset and just wanted more attention.

Not a good sign. Seems more like a circuit-breaker doing what it's supposed to do. Do you recall doing any work requiring some disassembly around the time this started happening? Perhaps a grounded screw wasn't fully seated? Maybe the CPU fan has crapped out? A prong in the power jack bent?  I'd be tempted to at least pull the bottom and whatever else is easy to remove, and take a look around for anything suspicious. Sometimes just an disassembly/assembly like this is enough to fix the issue even if nothing was found.   Jack E/NJ

I fear you might be right JackE, I've put in a ticket to Acer Service the same time I posted in this Community Forum, but haven't heard anything back yet... Smells like a motherboard replacement might be in my future. Smiley Sad The unit was built in 2011 but it's a hell of a great notebook so It's worth sinking some bucks. Oh well.

There are 2 mainboards listed MB.RJ206.002 & MB.RJ506.002. Amazon has one of them but you won't like the price. At this point, it might be more practical to at least poke around inside a bit yourself or spend a few bucks at a local shop to do same. While it doesn't seem to be an overheating issue, it might also be worth trying to vacuum the air intake port just in case dust bunnies are are somehow involved. It could be something simple for a machine that's been in use for 6 years. Jack E/NJ

As a related issue... Anyone else getting ZERO response/satisfaction from Acer's Support Portal? I have entered this notebooks case as a request for paid repair THREE TIMES now, and no one has followed-up with me yet.  I come back a few days later, check the status of my ticket, and it's marked "closed" every time.

The repair depot for Acer is on McAdam Road in Mississauga, the same street my company was on for 25 years, should I just pop-in and surpize them, or is there someone I can kick remotely to enter this repair request!?

That's the one... I re-re-re-reentered the ticket, with verbiage detailing how the ticket keeps getting closed and asked someone to respond to the request, they did (although I don't care for the answer at all):

    "Dear Craig Milton

Thank you for contacting Acer. We understand it can be frustrating when a product does not work properly, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We have received your online request for repair; unfortunately, we are unable to complete your request. Due the age of the unit should replacement parts become necessary, they may not be readily available."

I was provided links to several hardware vendors to obtain parts. Ugh. So last night I completely tore-down the notebook -- I've been unable to locate any faults at first inspection -- cabling all looks good, no blow-out components (that I could see), so I'll shake the whole thing, sprinkle some pixie dust on it, reassemble and hope for the best.

At this point, I fully agree! But shake it easy. And sprinkle invisible dust only. And as long as you got it apart, I'd also use a vacuum blower on the components for good measure. Good luck! Jack E/NJ

@WhiteTrashAndy just use the @ sign to tag him. But his last post to the thread was three years ago so he might not be monitoring. Better would be to start your own thread. Include the full model number, the symptoms you are seeing and the steps you have taken to diagnose. We'll start trying to figure it out from there. At nine years old that model would certainly be liable to have battery issues at this point.
