There are 3 ways to get video output: HDMI, mini display, and Thunderbolt 3.

Which is best output for gaming? Specifically I was trying to play the dolphin emulator on my television through the HDMI output and it slowed the emulation down to half.
I read that it may be because it is not connected right to the GPU or CPU. Could that be why? Which of the ports are connected to the GPU and CPU so I know what to use.

It seems HDMI is not the way to go. I have not tried mini display or thunderbolt because I do not have adapters for them yet. So I am wondering which adapters I would need. Or if dolphin would even work on an external display at all. It runs fine on the laptop screen and on my other laptop with an external display but has no GPU. So I am assuming something with the GPU is causing this issue. Any ideas?

Use the Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt, adapters are cheap and readily available on Amazon. The only problem you face with using your TV is bottlenecking, that is to say that unless your TV has a Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt connector it will convert speed etc.. to the Max that your TV's HDMI will support. So the answer to your question is that to obtain 144 Hz at all resolutions you would need to use an external Monitor with the same Port as you are using on your laptop e.g. Mini Display Port

Thunderbolt is fully compatible with Mini DisplayPort peripherals . Technically, the plug is the same and the only difference is that the Thunderbolt connector can carry – in addition to the classic Mini DisplayPort – a Thunderbolt signal, which is a signal PCI-Express (4 lines).

Okay cool thanks for clarifying that.
But if that is the case, Dolphin should still work through HDMI at 60 or even lower. But it stops down the emulation speed to half and drops to 30 frames.

Make sure your external Monitor has the Nvidia card selected in the Nvidia Control Panel
