Predator 17x goes black, wont turn off then will not boot, power button is only thing turning on.

I was using my Acer Predator 17x (GX-792-7448) laptop and out of nowhere the screen went black. everything became instantly unresponsive, no keys worked, the power button did not work, and i could not do anything. Meanwhile the "P" power button was still on with a red LED, and the battery light indicator as well as the light bulb indicator to the right of the battery indicator.

After reading through multiple support forum posts on your this, I was able to get the laptop to turn off (all of the rest of the lights that were staying on at least... thus preforming a hard battery interrupt and finally allowing the laptop to turn off. I have tried many different 'quick fix' solutions and methods but i have been unable to get the laptop to turn back on and start up.

When I press the power button after doing the hard interrupt power down, the red LED power button above the keyboard turns on, along with the "light bulb" indicator (and battery indicator if plugged in)... but nothing appears on the screen, i do not hear any sound from the fans, and i do not hear the normal startup/boot sounds. At this point, still everything is unresponsive... including the power button to turn it back off. The only way to power the laptop back off is by preforming ANOTHER hard battery power down by putting a thin paperclip in the hole on the back, even though nothing has turned on except the LED light.

This is extremely frustrating, and I need to be able to use this computer on monday for work. Please help me come to a solution with this! All that acer has done after contacting support was to say that I needed to send the laptop in for warranty maintenance and that they would maily me a shipping label.

**Note** -- i have tried holding the battery interrupt pin for upwards of a minute, and it does nothing. I have not tried to remove RAM or anything else, as I have not removed the back of the laptop yet since it is such a PITA, but i'm guessing that might be one of my next moves.

Regardless of the redundancy, I welcome anyone who might have tips, things that worked for them, or even similar issues. I saw some posts mentioning they could not boot or power on, but all the keyboard and side panel lights are on... which mine are not. ONLY the power button "P" for predator above the keyboard. Not sure if this makes any difference, just trying to provide all of the details. Sorry if this was redundant in any way or scatterbrained... i have been up all night with extreme anxiety trying to fix this because i have crucial work files that were not backed up currently to the most recent point and I not only will be in a serious predicament if i cannot use the computer for the next 7-10 business days while it would be sent in for repair, but if i lose my data.... well i dont even want to think that far into it because it get anxious just thinking about that happening.... pray for me...

  • Hello! I know you already reset the battery. However, do the following in the video:

If resetting the battery does not solve the problem, I would start by checking whether or not the rams are bad by testing each one individually.

DMO91 try it this way press/hold for 30s+ let it rest for 2/3h to be sure all capacitors were completely discharged of any power remaining n the mobo then try to boot (if possible) into bios (even if using an external display) and reset setup to defaults also would be good to check the ram compartment and see if you have a power kill switch there next to the ram sodimms and if its properly pressed when closed if not sure add some layers of electrical tape to the tip that presses it

i have tried holding the pin for 60 seconds and letting it sit for multiple hours and then booting with an external screen plugged into hdmi, but the same thing seems to happen... the only thing that lights up is the power button "P (predator symbol), but does not seem to even attempt to boot into bios or anything. no sournds can be heard from inside computer. I will try this process again after i re-foot the ram and reply back.

    Thanks

DMO91 well the main question here now after all the suggested attempt fixes is if its still under warranty if so send it back but if not it wont be probably be cheap to get acer to diagnose the issue

yes it is under the 2 year warranty. they are sending me a shipping label. they said they think it could be a motherboard failure based on the conversation i had with customer support. they ensured me that since its under the 2 year warranty that a motherboard failure will be covered. my fear is that there is going to be some bs little exclusion or issue that causes them to flip the script and claim that i will have to pay for the replacement (if that is the case) we will see i guess.

in response to earlier suggestions... i was unable to re-foot the ram as they are located on the underside of the motherboard (jerks) so they are pretty much inaccessible without taking everything apart and i don't even want to go there at the moment given that my device will be going in for service in a few days. now i guess i will just have to go buy a SSD housing/usb converter for my internal drives in order to get all of my work documents backed up and usable on another device for the time being... before i can send it in, given the risk of losing data. im sure i will try to repeat these reset methods until then, hoping that a miracle occurs and my system boots up... but i have lost most of my faith at the moment.

DMO91 i hope you get it sorted anyway and yes never send anything back without either backing up everything or even cloning the drive into another keep us posted :)

DMO91 did you manage to fix your laptop, as I seem to have the same problem...Unfortunately for me I no longer have a valid warranty

hey everyone, thanks for all the responses. so i ended up sending in my device for warranty. luckily i had about 3 months left on the 2 year warranty that came with the laptop. the receipt shows that the motherboard was replaced... so im gonna assume that something fried it. gonna guess overheating. i guess ill be more careful to only place my laptop on hard surfaces from now on. good luck to the rest of you, and hopefully those of you out of warranty can figure out another  solution. (try taking off the back cover, unhooking the battery from motherboard, and removing the motherboard 2032 battery to fully reset the bios if it had gone into some sort of self preservation mode to prevent overheating and got stuck after cooling down. didnt work for me, but that doesn't mean it wont for you.

thank you all for the support and good luck,

Hey, i have the same problem.
One side note though, a few months ago my battery brole so i removed it, been running on power cord only since then.

Now i accidently pulled the power cable during a session and i have the exact same problem as the author.
I refuse to believe the motherboard is fried.

I have tried to hold the battery reset solution (even though i dont have a battery) which doesnt help.

Anyone able to help me as how to get computer up and rynning again?

  • You're referring to the CMOS RTC battery, right?
