Good Day

I have a client's notebook , I recently had to do a service on it and upgrade the SSD as she wanted to upgrade the hard drive to SSD with a fresh installation. I did that, installed the SSD with a fresh install of Windows 10 (RAM upgrade was not possible as you know the RAM is soldered on the board) so I put an SSD in for her, did the new windows install and to my surprise there was no Sound (NO sound device in device manager like HD audio device) like the laptop does not have a sound device, I know there are speakers I saw them when I replaced the drive with an SSD.

Summary I cannot install sound drivers as there is no device to install it to except Intel display audio. What can I do?

Sounds... bad, I'd imagine the onboard audio card is soldered onto the motherboard and even if the speakers were disconnected it should appear in the device manager just as well.

I wonder... did you install the drivers manually or did you leave Windows do it on its own? Intel's Display Audio is the one that goes over HDMI when connected, but I know some devices go through Intel's SST and a wrong installation of that could (maybe? I'm guessing here) make it not appear.

If you did it all manually, and there are no yellow triangles (either unknown devices, or devices presenting problems) in the device manager I'd try installing Windows once again, connecting the machine to the Internet and letting it update the drivers on its own. Maaaaaybe if it takes forever checking for updates to force driver update, but it shouldn't take too long.

Other than that, you could try booting off of a Linux live environment to see if sound actually works there, because if it does the problem lies in the configuration in Windows and if it doesn't then it's hardware related. If you need a tutorial on how to get a Linux distribution to a USB stick I just wrote up some instructions not long ago in another thread: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/772511#Comment_772511

I have booted Linux lite and there is still no sound , if I go to the Linux volume control and I go to output devices it says dummy output

Bad news then, what's the output of the following commands when you're in Linux?
    • sudo lspci
    • sudo lsusb
    • sudo lshw
You may need to redirect their output to files to post them here later on, they should show that's in the laptop and how it's connected; but it seems something was damaged during the repair.

PS. Redirecting by using the > symbol, for example: "sudo lspci > lspci.txt" would generate an lspci.txt file in the current directory.

I will try but looking at this laptop now I dont think this laptop being it so entry-level even came with a sound card because ok there is HDMI and internal stero speakers (could it be used as a dummy) but there is no Mic or Headphone output like on the normal models? I doubt if anything got damaged as only the drive was replaced.

There ought to be, anything needs to drive those internal speakers.

There's an audio download at the support page for that model too: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/7209?b=1

Yes I know but this model does not look like it has anything I have been doing laptops for a long time now and this is the first time I have seen this . It has no grill output for the speakers to speak out of nevermind that the RAM non upgradeable.
