I read similar posts that described solving the problem by updating the device driver. That's nice but this model has no direct cable connection for internet. Now what do I do?

Update: Did nothing more and now its connected with internet. Is it possible that it was just still updating? Is it possible that my adapter itself is going bad? If so, can it be replaced?
Open Device Manager. Do you see any red or yellow warnings? If none. open Network adapters folder. Right click on the wifi adapter. Uninstall the driver. Exit Device Manager without reinstalling anything. Shut down. Turn the laptop back on. Jack E/NJ
I saw a yellow ! but was not a hot spot. So I uninstalled the device and restarted. Network center says its connected but there is no internet. Diagnostic tool says it can't detect what wrong. Wifi is working in the house as my phone connects.

It may be that some windows update has caused the problem. I would try to reinstall windows by pressing alt + f10 before the Acer logo.

I agree. But first check to see if there was an automatic restore point that may have been created in this latest episode. If not, make sure system protection is enabled. Then uninstall the driver again like you did earlier. And wait for the handshake to complete. Then if it happens again, immediately check for a restore point so we can figure out which update is causing this and block it. As far as a card, yes it can be replaced but I still seriously doubt the card's hardware is the problem. Jack E/NJ
Open ControlPanel. Search 'restore point'. Click 'create a restore point' in left pane. In the box that pops up, make sure system protection is turned on in protection settings. Then click 'system restore' button near top. Then click 'next'. If system protection was turned on, there should be some auto update restore points that could've caused the relapse. Jack E/NJ
