Sorry I was not specific enough

I was not getting into the windows at all.

I could not even get in on safe mode

The only way to fix it was to get an installation disk which I have now done

I ran the repair and all is good

Do you want to do a reboot to factory conditions or reload drives and applications. Go to computer, program files, Acer, empowering technology, e-recovery, eRecoveryUI then select what you want from menu. Alternatively do a system restore. Hope this helps

Ah well looks as though I hit Kudos instead of reply, lol.

Open Computer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Computer.

    • Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.

    • Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. Administrator permission requiredIf you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report problems but not fix them.

To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

If this not worked, you could try the system filechecker stool

      • Click Start and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
      • Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
      • At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow and then press ENTER:
        Good luck

Glad to hear it, for future reference, I had a similar problem where my system was corrupted and my cdrom had stopped working, so I couldn't use my recovery discs. Fortunately I had backed up my system and so was able to use hold alt button and keep pressing F10 which takes you to system restore and gives you the option of resetting to factory conditions or resetting from back up which keeps all your files. Might be useful to know if you have any further problems

    So pleased you got sorted
