I actually installed Linux onto an external SSD vis USB just for people on here, and posted a thread on Nitro forums about the same with screenshots.
    https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/585144/guide-installing-linux-on-nitro-5-an515-42

I followed another post which was almost the same instructions as yours to install Ubuntu16.04, and then, in your following step:
"Remove the Live USB from USB 3 port.
Connect the SSD to the USB 3 port (leave it as it is if it is already on USB 3 port; I had to change since Nitro 5 came with only one USB 3).
Boot up laptop and click F12 to get to the boot menu.
    Select ubuntu and click Enter."
You said select ubuntu and click Enter. Yet for me there is even no option to select ubuntu! Only Windows booting options! That is my problem! And my computer is different from yours. It is an Acer Predator Triton 700. Could you offer any suggestions? Thanks!

"Select ubuntu and click Enter." -- this option is visible only if you boot up to the SSD. Use F12 when laptop is starting up and select the USB disk instead of internal hard disks.
Did you make sure to set up GRUB on the SSD where you installed Linux on?

Unless you see the below screen and select linux, you won't see Ubuntu option.

You could try redoing the process and post pictures or video of what you did.

Well im assuming if it doesnt show up in the bios boot manager/options as a bootable drive its because it wasnt installed properly

after installing Ubuntu 16.04 on the SSD, I connected the SSD to the laptop and enter the Windows 10 OS. There is no sign of the SSD.

jianning that is completely normal because windows cannot detect/see any ext2/3/4 partitions you would have to install 3rd party software (like Ext2Fsd or Ext2Read) to recognize and work with unix partitions on windows not like on linux that can detect any os system files/drives plug n play without any 3rd party software

When starting the laptop with the SSD connected, after pressing F12, there is no option of the SSD, only windows.

Then after inserting the bootable USB, and starting the laptop, there is the option of booting from the USB and Windows, but still not the SSD.

So I chose to boot from the USB and selected try Ubuntu. Then I found that the laptop seemed identified the partitioned SSD. For example, this is the /home folder when doing partition on the SanDisk SSD:

The following is the swap area on the SanDisk SSD:

The /boot folder on the SanDisk SSD:

And its grub folder (is that what you want me to show?):

Yet I noticed that the root folder seems not on the SanDisk:

You see, it is only 16.8GB, definitely not part of the SanDisk.

Also, there is a home folder under the root folder:
Perhaps that was the version I was "trying" at that time. Also, it seems that in the SanDisk SSD there is a Ubuntu system that is already successfully installed. Then why didn't the laptop recognize it during the booting process (I even created the boot folder, which I saw on some posts that it was just optional)? How do I boot into the Ubuntu 16.04 installed in the SanDisk SSD instead of the "try" version everytime the laptop starts?

One more question is: why the free space is 16.8GB? The storage for the bootable USB is 8GB (or about 7.99GB or 7.95GB if precisely speaking). Then where does the other 8.8GB come from?

jianning Again you ssd migh not show up in the boot manager because the unix uefi boot its damage why dont you try to install it on the ssd again connect all 3 devices at same time use for ex the ssd in the usb 3.0 port and the usb bootable installation drive into a 2.0 port or whatever is available and isntall it into the ssd again also if youre not experienced in working with linux distros i would stay out of it and try to learn something about it first using a VM OS instead

I tried installation again. Of course the results are the same. Yet this time I can provide with more details.

After setting the partition, there is the following question:

Though there are two choices, yet if I want to proceed, then I have to choose continue, otherwise it will go back. Yet I did notice that during the partition, there is an option called UEFI space (or called UEFI area, I don't quite remember, I think you know what I am referring to) besides EXT2/3/4, swap area, etc. I am not familiar with those things. I remember that the laptop use BIOS for booting. Does this mean that the Ubuntu wants to boot using UEFI rather than BIOS so that the installation fails? Do you think it is the real reason of my problem of not booting from the SSD? Another problem is, it is a bootable USB for installing Ubuntu 16.04, yet why on that question it says "if you continue to install Debian in UEFI mode"?

Then after choosing continue and fill in those settings, the installation begins. Yet there is no progress bar shown:

Does it mean something? Or just a trivial thing?

Did you choose CUSTOM partition or select CO-EXIST? Choose CUSTOM and select your external SSD as install location.

See the screenshot below (select external SSD on USB, and create two partitions - you only need two - / and swap).

If you are new to linux, stick to Linux in a VM or onto an external SSD. Installing on the same disk on windows could risk you losing both.

What do you mean by saying CUSTOM and CO-EXIST partition? Where do those options come from? On which step? I am confused. Could you show me a picture?

    Referring to your step:
    IN THIS
    VERY IMPORTANT STEP
    1. Your existing hard disks would also be listed here, along with the SSD.
Yet for me, my existing hard disks on the laptop is not shown. Thus I think there is no need for me to select CUSTOM or CO-EXIST. I have no choice. Also, I did Select my SSD for bootloader installation.
My situation looks the same as yours, except there isn't any sign or marks of the hard disk on the laptop, only the free empty external SSD. It seems that the laptop is resistant to any outer operating systems.

Or could be that your internal hard disks need some special drivers? What OS are you trying to install? Ubuntu 16?

I want to install Ubuntu 16.04 on the Acer Predator Triton 700 laptop with Windows 10 inside. Its SATA mode is locked to RAID mode and cannot be changed to AHCI mode.

Dont' get me wrong... unless you want to risk windows and bear all this pain, i would recommend getting an SSD and an SSD to USB enclosure (~250GB SSD and its enclosure can be gotten for as little as $50).
    Steps to do it: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/585144/guide-installing-linux-on-nitro-5-an515-42
(The steps hold good on both Predator 300 and Nitro 5, and so should be good on your model too.)
This way you won't even need to bother about other OS disks not showing up in any OS.

I tried again. As you said, only partitioned into 2 parts: \ and swap, like this:

Also, you see that there is no sign of the Windows disks.

And then, you know, it failed again, when booting, there is no option of the SanDisk.

Also, what is the EFI system partition in this picture? Is it about booting using UEFI or BIOS? Or it is not used during the installation of Ubuntu 16.04?

The EFI system partition (ESP) is a partition on a data storage device (usually a hard disk drive or solid-state drive) that is used by computers adhering to the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). What that means is that the EFI Partition is an interface for the computer to boot windows off of.

I did not create any such partition on my SSD.
