Is it possible to convert to Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my Aspire Z5700?

I have the exact problem described by manicmechanic, Post 9 in August 2015 archive. Windows 10 stalls at 85% and then locks up at 88%. I followed manicmechanic's instructions to the T, as far as I know. It fails differently, in that it gets to 85% and displays "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart" rather than hang with a black screen. I have updated to latest BIOS P01.B0 (2010) as MS claimed the BIOS had to be dated 2012 or later, but manicmechanic said his install worked with the P01.B0. Where do I go from here?

Start by looking at the log files that the Windows 10 installer creates. The setuperr.log and setupact.log should be in $Windows.~BT\source\panthers\.

billsey, the setupact.log is huge. I counted over 50 errors and stopped counting, but I'm going to post the top of the file, up to where the Panther logging is closed:

billsey, posted a comment on the errors in the setuperr.log, but I don't see it here. I can only assume that it was too large, as I tried to post a lot of the error log. I can revisit the setuperr log, if you have some further guidance on what you would be interested in. I see that I can attach a file. So, I will attach the setuperr.log file here. It doesn't appear this loader will allow me to upload the file. It doesn't have a hidden property, so I don't know why it can't be seen by this software.

So I saw a couple of others users that started with that error. In one case it was a conflict with their GPU and onboard video. They removed the GPU, did the upgrade, then replaced the GPU and installed its drivers. In the other case the user had two USB keyboards connected at one time. Could you try with everything unneeded disconnected?

    Hi Billsey,
Ran the install two times with what appears to be identical results in the setuperr.txt and setupact.txt files. It still fails. The first time I ran it, I removed the printer cable. The second time I ran it, I removed even the keyboard cable, so that the only cable connected was the internet cable. So, unless you can think of anything else, I guess I'm just out of luck with this Z5700, and I assume I will have to stay with Windows 7.

The best thing that you can do is to do a clean install of Windows 10, backup all your Windows 7 files and then do a clean install. If you can get into your Windows 7 and the internet? Then, download MCT (media creation tool) for Windows 10 from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 if you can't, then, use another computer to download MCT (media creation tool) for Windows 10 to a bootable USB thumb drive through MCT (see the 5 captions of this setup, that I've included below) this will install Windows 10 64bit v1903, OS build 18362.418 through the bootable USB thumb drive. Btw, the latest Windows 10 is the v1909 OS build 18363.535, so and after you install Windows 10, use "Windows Update" to get your system to the latest v1909 OS build 18363.535.

Now, get into the Z5700 BIOS and change the boot to USB option, make sure you have a Microsoft account e.g. Hotmail etc and make a note of your Z5700 Windows 7 key, reboot into Windows 10 setup and go through Windows 10 setup process and enter the Z5700 Windows 7 key, which should activate the Windows 10 to the “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account”, simple!

I wasn't able to dig anything out of Microsoft as to no longer supporting the early 1st gen CPUs, they had dropped support for the Atom processor that were actually newer than yours, but they've been silent on the more mainstream ones. It looks like the first bunch of errors are all dealing with connected standby, which is a function of the sleep modes the processor and chipset can handle. It's possible that we're doing just what you were afraid of, running into the lower limit for Windows 10 processor support. As SteveGen suggests you might have better luck with a clean install than with an upgrade, but a clean install also means a full reinstall of your applications. It's likely to be time for a good look at what your needs are. If you can replace the system within the next couple of years go ahead and leave it with W7 and plan on upgrading the hardware at the same time as the OS gets current. If that's not going to be in the cards, do the full backup, including the recovery image/disc, and after it's successful try the clean install. If it works you'll finally be able to pare your list of applications down a bit by only reinstalling the important ones. :)
Hmm, I've got a really, really old Thinkpad here, I wonder if I can install the 32 bit W10 on it? :)

Hi billsey, please ignore the above comment, posted at 9:57am today. It was left laying around, and I posted it, thinking it was the means to respond to your December 19 post.

I very much appreciate your effort to look into this problem. At least I know what I have to do if I really want to go to the effort. I do have a Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10, but it's not as nice as this desktop with the wide screen. So, I'm just going to stay with the Windows 7 on my Acer for now.

    Thanks again!

OK, this is a cut'n'paste from the Microsoft forum with a possibility. I believe the key here is to make sure W7 can complete all it's updates before the upgrade install.
Try manually reset the Windows Updates Components once again and then reinitiate the Windows Update process.

Resetting Windows Update Components will fix corrupt Windows Update Components and help you to install the Windows Updates quickly.

Please follow the below steps to reset the Windows Updates Components:

    1. Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

    2. Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                               net stop wuauserv

                               net stop cryptSvc

                               net stop bits

                               net stop msiserver

    3. Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                              ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

                              ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

    4. Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

                            net start wuauserv

                            net start cryptSvc

                            net start bits

                            net start msiserver

    5. Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it and then restart the computer.

6.After restarting the computer, now retry to install Windows Updates.

Hi billsey, just a question or two:
At first blush, it looks like I would wait until the install hangs at 85% to do the above, but then I'm questioning how I would do a simple restart. However, maybe the above steps are intended to be done at the prompt after it downloads the updates and before it begins to process the updates?

Those steps are done with Windows 7 up and running, before trying to restart the update process. They are targeted at getting the Windows 7 install as clean as possible before the Windows 10 upgrade starts. Hopefully they'll get you past that 85% hang and on to finish correctly.

Hi billsey, I'm afraid it failed in the same original manner: Black screen at 85% and locked up at 88%. Just to be clear, I want to give you the steps I took:
    1. Started Windows 10 Install.
    2. Waited for prompt that occurs after gathering all update files.
    3. Performed steps 1-4 above, successfully.
    4. In step 5, I exited Command Prompt, but just resumed the Windows 10 Install. I did not do a 'restart' of the computer. So, in effect, I did not do step 6.
I noticed just one anomaly, when I re-started BITS, it said it was already running. I can't remember/verify that it said it stopped successfully when I stopped it, but I thought all responses were good when I stopped all four processes.

What is the exact model of your T5700? Has it got the 3.2GHz Intel Core i5 650 and 4Gb RAM? If you want to do an upgrade there are allot of variables that Win-7 stops you from upgrading, as I suggested, forget about and upgrade from Win-7 to 10 and do a clean install, do a backup of your 7 and start again. If you persist and fail then, I suggest that you keep your Win-7! Btw, the Aspire T5700 (as you persist sticking with it) can be made into quite an efficient all in one to run Win-10 by upgrading the CPU putting an SSD and upgrading the RAM to 8GB but, that is another story lol

OK, try it again by booting into Windows 7 first, then run Windows Update to make sure there's nothing queued. Do the steps once there are no updates found and the system has been rebooted if any were installed. Only after the steps have been performed do you start the W10 install. If it still hangs then you're likely either stuck with W7 or will have to wipe to install W10. If the clean W10 install works it was a left-over driver. If it hangs even on a clean install it's a hardware conflict.

billsey, there is a catch 22 situation with installing all upgrades and performing the 6 steps outlined in your Dec. 20 post. The 2 optional upgrades remaining are MS Security Essentials, and once installed, they deny access to rename the files in the Windows environment. So, I had to proceed without installing the 2 optional Security upgrades. It fails in the same manner.
My next step is to look at doing a clean install. I can do one from a version that MS support downloaded onto my Acer, under Users/Craig, but I'm in process of downloading the W10 install file onto a new thumb drive. My only concern at this point is not being able to install my 2010 office suite, as I don't want to move to the office 365 and pay annual fees. But I did, just that, on my Surface Pro 4 with W10 and it didn't complain. So, I may be ok.

Success! I used the same W10 setup file on my computer that MS Support downloaded for me, and the one I have been using during this trouble-shooting process. The only difference is that I opted to preserve my files only, and not my apps. It still had several places where it would black screen, but it got past the 88% lock up, and finally completed the install. When it black screened, I just manually shut it down, and powered back up. I'd say that happened five times, but I have been able to install Office 2010, verify Word and Power Point, and install and verify a Bible search program. So, I'm still piecing things back together, but I'm happy so far.

Yes, if your Office 2010 was a retail version then the license allows you to remove it from one computer in order to install it on a different one.
BTW, I did give it a try with that old, old Thinkpad (originally came with XP) and no joy. I was able to get W7 running on it, but every attempt at W10 failed with blue screens when trying to initialize drivers. So there is one at least that can't be updated. :( I do have a couple of Dell laptops from 2006 that are running W10 just fine, so it's not every old system that breaks. :)
My oldest Acer is a W700 tablet and it runs W10, eight years old and counting.
