How is your Acer Aspire TimelineU M5 fan?

I purchased my Acer Aspide TimelineU M5 (the 15" screen one), and my fan noise is terrible. I looked through some reviews online and many actually complimented the Timeline on its quiet fan except when gaming or using cpu intensive programs. My fan is loud on startup and remains so continuously, even on idle with only the most basic programs opened. Very rarely do I get a moment when the fan is running quietly, and even then, it is for half a minute at best.

I'm worried that the ultrabook I purchased has a defective fan, or worse, a defective processer. Can anyone confirm for me their Timeline's laptop noise and whether or not it is similar to mine? Any information or advice is appreciated.

I really like this laptop, but if the noise persists, I'll probably have to return it, which sucks. ):

Thanks,

Vincent.

It could be that something is running, even in the background, that is keeping the fan speed high.

We would suggest contacting technical support in your region for further assistance with this issue.

I have just bought the TimelineU M5 as well.

What strikes me the most is that it keeps spinning up the fan whenever the temperature rises above 45-47 degrees. It goes from totally silent to jet-engine, and it does so regulary every 30-60 seconds.

It's frustrating and a complete deal-breaker for me. Considdering how the timelineX 5820TG was dead silent even when watching youtube videos, this new laptop is terrible if you want to use it at the bed-side or if you want to concentrate when reading things on the screen. It fluctates on and off constantly.

I even tried using the power-save power option in windows, and taking down the maximum CPU usage to 50%, and yet, nothing changed.

I am really sad that Acer hasn't given users a tool to alter the fan-control intervals. The fan should not spin up at idle or regular internet usage.

I bought an Aspire One 725 netbook yesterday and the fan noise is unbearable. It's on loud and constant, even with no programs open and sometimes speeds up to sound like a helicopter starting up. There is no way I can concentrate on anything - it's so bad that I can even hear it over the top of music when using headphones. I feel like smashing up the computer!

My previous netbook, an Aspire One 255 was completely silent; I don't recall hearing the fan at all, even under heavy use. I had a Dell netbook before that, which was silent, and a silent Sony laptop before that.

Surely this can't be right. If it is - I want my money back.

    Hello,

I have Aspire M5 before a day i had the same issue any solution for that?

I went to the service centre they told that screw mounts are cracked and a part of that has damage the fan.

    Its a design fault.

Please post any solution like controlling fan speed. Or the only option is pay for a new fan.

I've had my Acer since May this year, and it's been great for me! I know what everyone is talking about with the ''jet engine'' fan, but I don't know why you would expect any less from such a compact machine. I hear it, but it hasn't seemed to bother me as much as it seems to bother others. I feel it runs when it needs to, and it's not over done, or seemingly faulty. I suppose that's because mine might be working properly while others are actually fault.  Mine is normally quiet until I start streaming videos on youtube or other video streaming sites. Otherwise it sounds like a quiet low speed fan.

However, my problem with its noise is different than others in the forum, and just started a few days ago. I was using it on my bed, got up and set it down, (I use a lap pad so the laptop is on a hard, even surface, not blocking the fans) came back and put it back on my lap and all of a sudden it started to make a clicking sound when the fan would spped up. I noticed when I would shake the laptop it would make it stop, and it doesn't always do it when the fan increases speed, but if it's like the step below highest speed it will click, like it's hitting something inside, or faulty, about it break. I'm a bit concered, and puzzled. After only having it a few months, I'm disappointed that something's already off with it.. Anyone know what this might mean, does it just need the dust blown out of it, or is there a technical problem? Thanks Smiley Happy

Exactly the same happend to me, purchased the laptop in late april this year, took care of it, I always used it on hard/even surface, and I didn't find the fan sound noisy. But a couple of days ago, the fan started to sound like it would hit something when it's spinning at maximum speed. When I lift and rotate it a litte, the noise stops and start again, so I am quite sure that it contacts some other part of the laptop... So I'm also worried, and I would be glad if someone gave us a(n) answer/advice/solution... Smiley Happy

    Hey guys,

I got my M5 yesterday, it's an awesome notebook but the fan is freaking me out! It's not only standard noisy fan, the frequency is very high (higher than the fan of my older notebook) and thats what makes it so annoying! Even in engery saving mode, with NO programms running at all, the fan is continously loud.

I tried SpeedFan, to control the RPM's but the program didnt recognize the fan..

I can't believe Acer doesn't have atleast a software to regulate that. A simple silent mode would be sufficent, I mean, the i5 is laughing about simple PDF documents or internet surfing...but the fan is still freaking out..

Fix that, I got 20 more days to send it back, otherwise I'll have to chose a different Notebook..

btw. as a student, I'm working at the library and with a noisy laptop like this it's not possible to study there, nor to concentrate on reading scientific lectures.

So please, tell us what to do.

    Kind regards

    dear All,

Let me bring to your attention another testimony...

I received my Acer Timeline U M5-581TG a year ago (december 2012). The fan's sound levels were acceptable, but higher than the ones I was used to with my previous laptop (Acer Aspire 5810TG). That was somewhat a disappointment...

In March 2013, that is three months after the computer's delivery, the fan started to become louder and louder, specially during the bootings, to the point that I had to send it to repair. The fan was replaced, and the level of sound was back to initial levels. Unfortunately, since the beginning of January 2014 (this very month...), the fan has started to be noisy again. I have to add that my computer lies on a flat wooden surface, eliminating any obstacle for the laptop's ventilation.

I ordered the very same computer for my friend, and her laptop exhibited the same problem of fan's noise a year after its delivery.

These observations lead me to the idea that there might be a misdesign of the ventilation's circuit, that generates dust accumulations in the fan.

    Kind Regards,

    Philippe
