Nitro 5 AN515-51 turning off - caused by FitBit

My Nitro 5 AN515-51 suddenly started turning itself off at random times. It would go black, and pressing a key would bring up the sign in screen. It would repeat this before I could even sign in. I sent it to Acer, who said there was nothing wrong with it. I tried various fixes I found here, but they didn't work. I was very frustrated.

Then I found the cause--my new FitBit Charge 2. We watched as the screen and keys went black each time the FitBit got close, then lit back up when it was pulled away. The laptop only shuts down if the FitBit is near it. It doesn't do it 100% of the time. Sometimes it will continue working when I'm wearing the FitBit. But once it shuts down, it won't stay up until I remove the FitBit.

The solution was simple--Don't wear the FitBit when I'm on the laptop. No problem any more. I am happy to be able to use the laptop again without wanting to throw it across the room. (Yes, I was that angry at it.) And I'm especially happy that it's such a simple fix.

I'm sharing this in hopes that 1) someone else will be helped by this same solution and 2) maybe Acer would consider trying to figure out why this is happening, and how to avoid it in future models.

I discovered it's not the FitBit. It's the magnetic clasp on the band. There's a spot near the front of the keyboard, just left of the touch pad. When the magnet gets near it, everything goes dark. (Sorry for falsely accusing the FitBit!)

    THANK YOU FOR THIS!!

I have a Samsung Gear and my Nitro is only a few months old -- it started reacting in the same way and the first few times I brushed it off, but it has a cooling fan at all times, isn't kept on 24/7 and I was scared I would need to get it worked on! I just took mine off and hope that it stops the issue. It was scaring me, it wouldn't respond unless i closed it and essentially signed in again!

That's a smart observation, especially considering many people use devices like this that may include a magnetized band or clasp. Even some jewelry has magnetized clasps and such. When it comes to electronics, they can be quite sensitive! Thanks for sharing your insights.

thank you so much, I purchased a bracelet with a metal clasp last march, I wear it on my left wrist every time and I now realize this problem started at the same time. It was something I didn't wear everyday But I wore it most days and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was causing it. I have reset this thing three times, I took it to best buy and paid them 200 dollars for nothing, I have messed with scripts, I have messed with things I had no business messing with at 3am because I believed something was corrupted and just wanted to work on my thesis. Comes to find out it was my bracelet, I have a laptop stand so I rest my wrist right on the spot pretty often. I am so thankful to know the problem. I have researched non stop just looking under the windows umbrella because I was told it was definitely software and not hardware related. I am a fifth year architecture student and this problem has made me want to take a hammer to this machine. I have just been driven so crazy and ready to buy a new laptop. Thank you so much

I am so glad to see that my post has been a help! That's why I shared it. It was frustrating to find no information to help when I was having trouble. It's definitely the magnet on the band. I occasionally forget to take it off when I'm on the laptop, and remember when the screen goes dark. I'm glad it's an easy fix!

Ow wow! I bought a Nitro laptop (5 AN517) two days ago and almost sent it back to the store because of this! Tonight I finally figured it must be something 'coming from the outside', as my laptop went black before I even touched the keyboard. So I blamed my Fitbit/wrestband.
Glad I am not the only one having this problem. But weird this has never happened before on other laptops......

Wow, so you all don`t know that the laptop has a magnet on the top bezel of the screen and a hall sensor at the body and when the lid closes the magnet activates the hall sensor and the laptop goes to sleep? It`s even written in the user manual to not leave magnetic materials  on top of the KB, Touch pad and close to the body.
