Acer Chromebook 15 (N15Q8) - Trackpad stutters, goes dead for 1 second out of every 5 seconds

A wired mouse is smooth.
A bluetooth mouse is smooth.
The trackpad however is not.  It tracks just fine, then the mouse pointer freezes on screen for about a second, then returns to working as if nothing went wrong.
This has been getting worse and worse over the last months, to the point where it's not really usable.  Tracing a circle on the trackpad does not result in a circle on
screen because of the gaps.

Has anyone seen this?  Solved this?  It's hard to imagine it's the trackpad hardware, but maybe?  Software update?

Is there a parts guide?  What part number is the trackpad?  I don't find any on eBay, but I'd be willing to try swapping the trackpad out.

Is there any chance the battery is starting to swell and push on the trackpad from the bottom?

There is no evidence of a swelled battery.
Do any other laptops use the same model trackpad?
