Hello I have an ASPIRE Z1650 All-in-one. I upgraded the OS to Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit from original and increased RAM to 6 GB (I was surprised that chipset and OS can USE the whole RAM) so everything was working fine.

Until I noticed that Windows Device Manager showed an alert about chipset so I looked for updated drivers at https://www.acer.com/ac/en/ID/content/support-product/4045 but there isn't any related to Win 7 64-bit but there are some about Win 8 64-bit. The BIOS version that was working fine is P01.A0 but I updated BIOS to version P01.A1

But now I CAN NOT START WINDOWS because the Bios screen shows that THE SYSTEM IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 64-BIT OS

Please Help me to DOWNGRADE BIOS to previous P01.A0 ¿Where can I get the ZIP file for this AMI BIOS?

Thank you

  • Probably uefi mode was activated when updating bios. Can you upload some bios screenshots?

Thank you for your quick reply.
I took a picture before updating to verify that my Bios was out of date

[Edited the image to remove inappropriate or personal content - Acer-David]

I downloaded BIOS version P01.A1 for Windows 8 64-bit to perform the update.
After BIOS was flashed, I verified the new version and loaded the Optimized Defaults using F9 by the book.

But now, I Can NOT start Windows because BIOS says that CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode.

How can I revert this BIOS upgrade?
Is it possible to get the original P01.A0 version for this AMI BIOS?
    Thank you in advance
  • What is happening is that bios must be in uefi mode while its operating system was installed in legacy mode. Could you get some screenshots of other bios functions?

    Hello again.

I took some pictures from BIOS, those are the Default settings:

    MAIN

    Advanced

    Advanced > Miscellaneous

    Advamced > Advanced Chipset Conf.

    Advanced > Integrated Peripherals

The other screens are about Power

    Security

    BootOptions, Sve & Exit

I just tried several changes, but anyone solved the problem because I can not start windows 64-bit with this BIOS version

I changed ONBOARD SATA MODE From AHCI to IDE but didn't work

    Then Disabled X protect

Then disable SATA but in this mode there is no HDD

So, I loaded Optimized defaults again but nothing works

I hope there is a new version for this BIOS or a way to roll back to P01.A0 version that worked perfectly on 64-bits

  • I would like to check the bootoptions option. Also, have you created a password in change supervisor passwords?

Thanks again for your quick reply.

I have NOT created a password, Not on previous BIOS version neither in the new one.

This is the default BootOptions picture

Then, I made this change to test

    But it didn’t work

Even in any combination with other options like AHCI/IDE and Intel XD Bit protection Enabled/Disabled

I found this BIOS version P01.A0 but it is for a different model of Acer:
So, I have NOT downloaded it neither tried to install it.
Do you know if there is a new update for Acer Aspire z1650 all-in-one BIOS?
Can I get the previous release of BIOS version P01.A0 for my product?
Is it possible to use this package even if it is for a different model?

    Thanks in advance

  • OK! Create a password in change supervisor password. Then check for any functions called launch csm.

I set the Supervisor Password, but I can NOT find Launch CSM option neither Disable Secure boot or change to Legacy mode instead of UEFI

I also tried  Setup and System Security Option and even to press alt+F1 or ctrl+F1 in order to see if some hidden option were shown but nothing.

I also tried to upgrade OS to win 8 to match exactly what the Acer support page shows on download BIOS  https://www.acer.com/ac/en/ID/content/support-product/4045 but it is the same error but in a graphical mode.

I was thinking on shrink one partition on my disk and install Linux on free space and try to install BIOS package version P01.A1L to see if this one supports 64-bit because I have tried starting from FreeDOS and I can Not run any version of AFUDOS because it says that system doesn’t match even when I downloaded from Acer Z1650 official page.

Please help me to get back to 64-bit compatibility that P01-A0 version has.

    Thanks in advance

  • Do you have important files on hdd? In addition, this desktop has uefi mode, which only works at 64bits. Only on tablets you can install uefi on 32bits.
Can you enter the first ten numbers of partnumber or the exact model of your desktop? Example AZ1650-MD10S
I believe your model came with windows 7 and a legacy mode version of bios in version p01.a0. The bios p0.a1 should refer to there is some version that came with windows 8 in uefi mode. Have you tried formatting hdd and reinstalling windows?

    Hello, The SNID IS: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

[Edited to remove the inappropriate or personal content - Acer-David]

    Model Name: AZ1650

    Part Number: PW.SJUP8.001

This model came with Windows 7 Starter 32 bit version preinstalled and 2 GB of RAM, but after original hdd failed, I upgraded RAM to 6 GB and a put new hdd, then installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit without any problem, everything worked fine on original BIOS P01.A0 (Both version 32/64bit were supported) and windows used whole RAM (6 GB).

After some alerts about chipset on Device manager and Windows update, I looked for drivers at Acer support page but new BIOS P01.A1 only supports 32bit despite the package should have work with Win 8 64-bit according to https://www.acer.com/ac/en/ID/content/support-product/4045

I used the Windows 7 DVD trying to recover 64bit installation, but BIOS says that my CPU is not compatible, so I used this bootable DVD to shrink partition D: and try a new installation of Win7 64-bit on new partition E: even DVD completed the installation but after reboot, again BIOS says that it is not supported now I have two windows 7 to chose but no one starts.

Then tried again, deleted partition E: and installed a new Windows 7 Home Premium but now 32-bit on partition E: and it worked but it uses only 3GB of 6GB RAM.

From this 32bit windows environment, I Just made a backup of my files on partition D:  There are some files on partition C: that I cannot access because they should be encrypted by Windows 64bit, but I agree to format whole HDD and delete all partitions if needed; but I’m almost sure that BIOS won’t allow 64-bit version again until BIOS was updated or downgraded or Legacy options could be enabled but I don’t know how to do it with P01.A1 version.

Do you think that with Linux/Ubuntu I can update BIOS to P01.A1L and see if this version has Legacy option available?

Do you know how can I access to hidden options on current AMI BIOS?

Do you know if there is a different BIOS/firmware package from Acer support page or American Megatrends that could work?

  • The quiet boot function which is disabled on your desktop bios was widely used before uefi. Try enabling quiet boot and make sure you enable legacy mode instead of uefi and then try accessing windows x64 again.

That's just the problem. I cannot see any way to enable legacy mode instead of uefi in this BIOS version. I can only chose first boot option hdd before EFI but it did't work for 64bit. I wonder if there is a way to unhide advanced option like legacy mode or CSM because Supervisor password didn't make any difference.
    Thanks in advance
  • Have you tried installing windows 8 x64? I believe this version of bios will work on windows 8.

Hello, Yes, I tried to install Windows 8.1 64-bit, even after deleting all partitions and formatting hdd, I tried using USB and DVD but there is an error because BIOS is reporting that CPU is only 32 bit

I also tried to install Linux but the error is always about CPU reported by BIOS, because this Intel Atom D2500 processor has 64-bit compatibility but BIOS P01.A1 lost this compatibility.

I tested the CPU using BITS Application to verify 64 bit Extended Function

Then I tried again using Windows 8.1 but 32-bit and It can be installed. Unfortunately, it can only use 2.99GB of 6 GB RAM installed and I this OS requires more resources that win 7.

Because of that, I insisted on BIOS update and used FreeDOS to flash version P01.A1L for Linux and see if this ROM file has 64-bit compatibility like P01.A0

I had to include /X option to let it Flash ignoring ROMID.

After making all 64-bit test on new BIOS they failed again about CPUID even trying to change Boot options or using Supervisor password, I realiced that the only way to recover 64-bit compatibility and take advantange of all the RAM is geting a new ROM file.

I wish I have known about AFUDOS options like "BKUP.ROM /O" to would’ve saved a copy of previous ROM before updating it. But now I only hope that somebody with this Aspire Z1650 can help me to share its preinstalled P01.A0 BIOS Rom file (It's a safe procedure) or that Acer will release a new upgrade or even previous releases.

I made a comparition on three ROM files I have so I won't try to use P01.A0 because has diferent size and ROMID, at the end The only diference on Linux and Windows ROM version is the IDE / AHCI Sata by default.

  • Have you tried to disable the "quiet boot" function?

Yes, I disabled Quiet Boot. The only difference is that on booting it shows more info, this is the screen

I finally formated HDD, re flashed BIOS to P01.A1 version and installed original Windows 7 starter 32 bits to match factory default (except BIOS) but RAM is not used at all.

I will keep looking for P01.A0 for this Part Number: PW.SJUP8.001 There may be some one that has a PC like this with original BIOS that can share its ROM file.

I found this Acer support page, this model is very similar to Z1650

    https://www.acer.com/ac/es/MX/content/support-product/3533

They have the same Chipset model NM10 Express

    https://www.acer.com/datasheets/2012/4871/Z1650/PW.SJUP8.001.html

    https://www.acer.com/datasheets/2011/4871/Z291G/PQ.VD6P8.004.html

The only difference is that Atom processor of Veriton Z291G is D525 that is a previous version of D2500 in Aspire Z1650.

There are three BIOS versions available (P01.B1, P01.B2 & P01.B3) Do you think that one of them may work to recover 64-bit compatibility?

I will use FreeDOS and https://ami.com/ami_downloads/Aptio_4_AMI_Firmware_Update_Utility.zip to verify BIOSID, Size and Testing them before try to flash.
