Triton 700 PT715-51-732Q: Throttles at lower battery; can't charge

edited June 2019 in Predator Laptops
Here's what's happening to my 2018 Predator Triton 700:

1) i had a nasty thunderstorm knock out my power yesterday causing my laptop to go on battery power
2) when i return home the pc had shut down from a dead battery
3) power comes back on and i boot her back up fine, except the battery has now only charged to ~12% and stopped
4) if i unplug the power cord and plug back in, it continues to charge for around 0.5% before quitting again
5) i tried to load up a game, but the machine is throttling the CPU heavily and the game is unplayable (assume because of low battery charge?)

QUESTION 1: how can i stop the pc from throttling? its essentially made it a brick
QUESTION 2: anyone know why i have to keep unplugging/plugging back in to charge uber-slow?

thanks!

  • Hello! Can you tell me the exact model of the notebook? Example an515-51-75kz! If your notebook was plugged into the electrical outlet when the storm, it is possible that the power adapter has been damaged! Have you already tested with another adapter?

    Model: PT715-51-732Q

The notebook was plugged into a surge protector, but I guess it's possible it was damaged. Although the light on the power brick is green. By unplugging and plugging in the power cord over and over again I've managed to raise the battery up to 34%. However the machine is still throttling substantially so I cannot play any games. Do you know how to disable throttling?
  • Is this notebook still under warranty? Have you tried using the throotlestop program?

    no and no?
  • Check with this program if the notebook is being used in the power adapter and how it is wearing out the battery:

Try plugging the power adapter directly into a properly grounded electrical outlet!

battery LED is a solid orange. i've plugged in wall now, but no change.

  • Você pode testar o adaptador com um multímetro para ver se ele atinge 19,5v?

no i dont have one of those (if you said a voltmeter?). i've ordered a new charger should get here tomorrow, then i'll be able to compare. should it be a constant 19.5V?
  • This is the voltage used to charge the battery! Do you have how to test the adapter with a voltmeter?

no i said i do not have a spare voltmeter. but the app you provided says 12.7V so i'm guessing this is the issue? should the app read 19.5? so it's 6.8 undervolt?

umm, this is so strange. the battery was just at 37% and not charging. i just checked again and it jumped to 100%, which can't be right. this is so strange

Is your battery charged normally when the notebook is off? Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting it?

Is your battery charged normally when the notebook is off?
    yes.

    1) it's left plugged in 90% of the time
    2) the other 10% is when i travel and it's kept hibernated
  • No! I would like to know if the battery is charged normally when the notebook is shutdown?

sorry i don't understand your question...? are you asking if the battery charges normally when it's shut down or if it used to charge normally? this issue just began last night
  • When you turn off the notebook, does the battery charge normally?

There are a couple of possibilities that I see right now. It could be the power supply was damaged with the electrical surge and is no longer able to accurately tell when the battery is fully charges. You said you have a replacement coming tomorrow and that should deal with that. It's also possible, but less likely, the battery itself took a hit and no longer reports the correct status. That would require a battery replacement, but we can put it on the back burner for a while until we've exhausted other options. Another possibility is that the battery sense software has gone out of whack and is showing incorrect info with the battery percentages. This is what I'd say is most likely. It happens often on systems that are left on the charger most of the time, because it never gets to see a full discharge/charge cycle. The fix for that is a couple of full discharges following each with a full charge. Typically you do that charge while the notebook is still turned off after the discharge. The side benefit to the cycle is you can get an idea of the discharge time. Just fire it up, disable the automatic sleep after x minutes and let is run down to the critical battery level point where it shuts off (or perhaps hibernates in your case). After it's off plug in the power and wait for the charge light to go blue before turning it on and restarting the discharge. If it's stuck at 35% and yet takes the normal  several hours to discharge those cycles will reset the battery numbers and it should start giving valid numbers. If it says 35% and takes only an hour or so to discharge each time then it's time to look at the battery itself since some of the cells have likely failed.

I would get a windows battery report and compare the capacity with the full charged capacity as it was said above by billsey and very well u probably had a power surge that knocked out the charger or the battery or even both if the discharge managed to go through the adapter into the mobo  it shouldnt but might happen
