lost system memory

I have an Acer Iconia A100 7" tablet, and love it, but am having a storage area problem.

I have a 32GB card (/mnt/external_sd)added, and the memory programs say that it has 8GB free, but that the internal storage (/mnt/sdcard/) has 12.8G, and only 474 MB free. I then get "out of memory space" warnings sometimes, and have had to delete some apps, most of which take up very little space anyway.

The memory inventory programs show:

   system Data = 9.8 GB

   Media 772 MB

   Apps  1.7 GB

   Android  277 MB

    ... nothing else very big

   Free  474 MB.

What is the main space item "system Data", and what can I do to optimize of reduce it?

Hi! First excuse me for the bad english, I'm stil learning it.

    So, at the problem.

There is some kind of GPS bug for those tablets A100/A200/A500 wich makes an empty files in ./data/gps directory. No matter which kind of navigating software you are using, every time when you are using the GPS are generated more of those files. There is two ways to resolve the problem:

    1. If you don't have root, then the only option is to make a Hard Heset of your device.
    2. If you have root, then you must go to the directory ./data/gps and delete all txt files from the type - gl-YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS.txt using some king of Root Explorer (ES File Explorer for example).

    Have a nice day!

Thansk, I am not so sure about rooting... Is there a temporary root for cleanup?

ALso, seems like it woudl take a LOT of zero-zixed files to add up to 9 GB! :-)

I did not want to Root my device, so just did a factory reset, and reloaded all apps (from Google playstore), and now recovered 10GB of memory (only 1.x used out of 12G). Must be some disk space leak somewhere that accumuated over time.

PS: I used a backup /recovery app (rerware.com - myBackukp Pro), and it did a very partial job. It restored all icons and desktop layout, but they were all orphans, and I had to goto the PlayStore and manually re-download and install all apps.
