Hi
I Have a problem with my aspire 5742G. It works fine for 1.5 year and then while I was playing a video game it was flashing the 3 lights and was not charging at that time. When I unplug and plug back the charger and it's fine and continuous charging. At that time it was happening only whit video games and not that often. But now its always flashes that 3 lights when I run a video game and after unplugging and plugging its changes nothing and continuous flashing.
The terrible thing is, that now its starts flashing while I'm working on Office or something like that, and it becomes more and more frequent.
Also I tried to run my Laptop without battery and instead of flashing that lights its simply turns down.
Please Help (

Try cleaning out the unit and checking the CPU to make sure that you don’t need to add some artic silver or anything. Also try a power reset on the unit by removing the battery and holding the power button down for 30 seconds. if the issue remains PM me and i will try and help a little more ok.

    Hi there,

    I have Acer Aspire 5742g nvidia gt-540m.

I am experiencing the same thing as Harutyun. 3 led light blinking when playing games and sometimes on other applications too. I tried the reset battery thing and it doesn't help. Cleaned everything inside the laptop, applied new thermal grease (not artic silver 5), replaced battery and power brick...Same thing happens..I don't really know what the problem is.  Please Help....Smiley Embarassed

The interesting thing is that when i take it to the support center, they changed the radiator and put one  for an I7, and it works, but sadly for a short time ). Now it isnt in warranty period and i dont know what to do.

    Finally I resolve this problem!

It was a cause of controllers in notebook. They changed two of this controllers in supply center:

    1controller of battery
    2controller of charger

Now it doesn't have any problem, and work normal )

    Hi.
I had the same problem on my acer aspire 5742g. I don't know if the poster above me worked out his problem, but this is how I did.

When i drawed too much power on the laptop, by using the discrete graphic card (while gaming), or while playing a hd video on fullscreen, the battery stopped charging and the power led, along with the two leds at the bottom of the casing (battery status and sleep mode status) started all blinking simultaneously.

I looked up my problem on forums and found out that those three blinking lights were a sign that the laptop had not enough current intensity through the DC jack. I opened up my laptop, following instructions from the manual. I found out that the cable between the DC jack and the motherboard was damaged, and that was why the power input was too low to do anything else than surfing and watching non-hd videos. I replaced the cable (ref. DW226, bought from that ebayer for about 5 €uros) and that fixed my problem.

If you have the same symptoms but changing that DC jack/cable doesn't fix your problem, you might as well check if some motherboard component has not been damaged, desoldered or overheated. Remember that this solution fixed my particular problem, but the whole blinking led thing is a sign of power intensity problem that may have different origins.
This solution may not apply to people in which the laptop doesn't start at all. If you are not confortable with opening your laptop by yourself, ask a more tech-savvy person around you or bring it to a professional with the replacement part, and ask him to replace it for you.

I hope that this will help other people to fix their laptop Smiley Wink

I am having exactly the same problem that pinkegobox mentioned on my acer aspire 5742g too.. But i think there's nothing wrong my "DC cable" inside the laptop.

So pinkegobox could you please tell me the Output "wattage" and the "ampere value"  of your laptop charger(AC adaptor)..

My charger's output is 19.5V, 3.42A and having 65W.. do you have a 90W charger???

I'm asking this because i think think my charger's 65W is not enough to play modern games..

i can do everything except playing games while charging..but while playing games, when i unplug the charger (after getting the 3 lights blinking) i still can play the game via the laptop battery..So i think there's some issue with my laptop charger.

Any other user who fixed this issue also welcome to tell me the values of the charger that i mentioned above..

Or anyone who has a acer aspire 5742g tell me the output values of your original charger..

    Thanks...
