triton 700 pt715-15 thermal thottling at 81c with 1.10 bios why?

Small update: while testing Pillars of Eternity 2, the GPU steadily maintained frequencies of about 1700, with no throttling.

But performance was indeed much lower than what it was in the past.
  • I wonder if it has something to do with the meltdown/spectre fixes issued recently.
Id imagine purging cpu cache after each task would take a toll.

A 50% toll is not a toll, it's armed robbery XD

I will update with the results from far cry 5, to confirm lower performance or not... although i do fear (much) lower performance. Some tests i made put my laptop lower than a 980. It's not good.

Last update: ok, i reinstalled Far Cry 5, i always used it as a benchmark and i remember perfectly what kind of FPS i had on it.

Performance is basically the same, i got 82 fps on average, whereas i got 86 sometimes before, but it is a result fluctuation that might be entirely normal.

I am now confused and don't know what to say.

    Recap:

Furmark: GPU doesn't go to full speed, it power throttles to 999mhz core, furmark confirms it is a power throttling, not a thermal throttling

Pillars of Eternity 2: lower framerate. I remember having about a hundred fps, and now i get from 80 to 60. This is not a game i used as a benchmark however so the results are not something i am entirely sure of.

Far Cry 5: marginally lower fps, 86 to 82 average, but it is in what could be simple benchmarking fluctuation and be normal.

As i said, i am confused and unsure now about the situation.

I have same problem on Predator GX-792. It starts throttling 70'C, but i use throttlestop BD PROCHOT to stop throttling. i have send this unit to acer group to maintain it but they just open it, clean it from dust and say that everything is in order.. :open_mouth:

    Thats pretty weird..
Maybe a conflict between in game graphic setting and nvidia ccontrol panel?

This is ridiculus... throttling detected at 75° with 38% cpu utilization... without any kind of stress test running.. just a game opened.. aida64 detect TT too... but if you whatch carefully, core frequency didnt change at all .... this is happening after bios update 1.10 from 1.06

they repaste it? did u notice some temps differences after that? i've activated an acer care plus pack (SV.WNGAP.A03) with onside support, they comes to my place (office) doing the job and i could assist it and figured out with him what was causing the issue)

Hello there, i've got some news about my problem...

3 days ago (on monday)  the acer tech comes onsite bringing with him a new motherboard replacement (with gpu and cpu soldered), while teardown the laptop after he raised up the copper cooler/heatsink from cpu-gpu we notice that half of the CPU surface was not covered with thermal paste, the other half was totally dry and nearly falling as ashed when he cleaned it.. gpu paste was ok

after some cleanings from the fan and heatsink we agreed that maybe we could do a test repasting it before trowing a full motherboard on the garbage..
after full cleaning, repasting and reassembly i ran some tests and i've got a -8 degree while gaming (battletech, the same exact game i was running in the previus screenshot when the pc shut down or TT was detected the pc keep 68-67 degree costantly) on both cpu and gpu, no more TT detection on xtu or aida and 88 degree max in combined stress test after 30mins, without AC, 25 ambient degree, no cooling pad and not raised from the table ... a truly marvelous unicorn-like image.

We agreed to let me test it for a couple of days at home in my friendly enviroment and let him know without closing the case.

yesterday i've told him to close the case because it's working as a charm... he told me that probably what was causing the issue after the bios update was a changing in tollerances from the reading temperature sensors of the cpu/core.. maybe the core that was turboboosting 3.8ghz get some heat spikes that make the MB goes in thermal protection all of the sudden.. he cannot assure at 100% because they didn't recieve any bios release notes and change list from acer .. this is just the most likely situation about what happens.

He told me that the new motherboard will not be shipped back to acer, they will keep that in the local storehouse (italy rome), probably i'm the only one with this kind of notebook in my town (i know for sure there are at least two of us.. me and skree) for any future necessity (my warranty cover the notebook till may 2021).

and now it's done.. the best support "from acer" i've ever recieved since when i buy this laptop and tried to activate the acer care plus... (that was a nightmare instead).

i've also got a new score in heaven 4 at ultra preset 2472 with 1847mhz as new gpu boost frequency

Glad to hear you have it worked out. Mine runs nice and cool but I repasted the day I received it with acrtic mx-4 on both the CPU and GPU because I was temp throttling on the cpu just playing normally.  I'm also running the 1.10 bios with no issues.

Now I can only get the cpu to hit 93c and throttle a little if I overclock the gpu and run both heaven and prime 95 at the same time. The GPU always remains at the 1800mhz boost with no throttling. I'm at -140 undervolted that seems to be my sweet spot. Normal gaming now with maxed out graphics and auto fans gets me to 84c on the cpu and 69c on the gpu. It's super quiet which is nice because this is my gaming machine at work and I don't want to disturb the people around me while I'm gaming at lunch.

I have to say this is the best laptop I've ever owned I don't miss my gaming desktop at all while at work or traveling!

Here are my results with just the intel stress test and the -140 undervolt with Arctic Mx4 paste and auto fans. Intel's test definitely doesn't stress the cpu like prime 95.

to give you a perfect match comparison i've put down a -140mv downvolt
25 ambient temp no ac no cooling stand or raised back (just on a desk)
fans at auto - bios 1.10

5 min test just xtu temp bouncing from 58 to 61, i've 9 degree less than you, if u already pasted it by yourself it's not a big issue try another time with kryonaut (it's what i'm using now).. at 61 degree fans are nearly not audible at all..

let me know if u need some more cross data :D

Nice results I wonder if it's more than just the paste? It looks like you have a more responsive fan curve. Wouldn't see why unless we're on different versions of Predator sense. Mine seems to allow a higher peek then a delay. In any case this system is so easy to work on I may give the kryonaut a shot or a good liquid metal if feeling ambitious. :) One thing I'm curious with yours though I see your boost going in to the 2-3 core range have you looked to see if all the cores are going to 100%? I'm surprised it boosts past the 3.4ghz for a 4 core test.

Maybe it is the paste. Not much difference with a fixed fan profile. I set the cpu fan to 3400 and ran the test again max temp was 66c

my predator sense it's the one i've founded in the notebook, and checked it's the last version avaible, fan curve could be tuned by that software or bios too by acer but i guess we have the same software/bios

and yep all the core are at 100% ..

check the freqs in hwmonitor during xtu test

Yup same versions I guess it's the paste very nice that'll be my next project when I get bored. I'll probably leave it as is for now I've had this thing open a dozen times swapping drives out.

basically i've your temps without the downvolt :disappointed:

Yeah I'm much higher without the undervolt.

    Here is -140

And here is normal with no undervolt. I'm getting close to 80c still fine but I prefer 70c

Man look at the package watts 10w less under load by undervolting
