We have wi-fi that works for our other computers. When I try with this laptop it says there are no connections available. This has never happened before. Any ideas as to what has gone wrong and how to fix it?

Hi, This wifi connectivity issue happens with many people. Easy fix is to just uninstall the Wireless driver and rebooting the unit.

    1. Press Windows key  + X and select device manager.

    2. Expand network adapter.

    3. Right click on the wireless driver and uninstall it.

    4. Restart the computer and check the functionality.

What is the full model number of your laptop?
The first option,  open the search and type in troubleshooting. Then click on Troubleshooting. Now you want to click on Network and Internet. Finally, you will see the different troubleshooters available for fixing wireless and Internet problems. The ones you will want to run are Internet Connections and Network Adapter.

    Reset TCP/IP
To do this, again open the search charm and type in command prompt. On the first listing, right-click and choose Run as Administrator.
At the command prompt, type in the following two commands, one at a time and make sure to press Enter after each one:
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Your wireless connection should be working at this point. If not, skip down to the bottom section which has more troubleshooting tips.

Another quick tip is to go to Device Manager, right-click on your wireless network card and choose Uninstall. Then reboot your computer and it should be automatically be detected and reinstalled.

Let us know the status of the issue. We will be glad to assist u further.

    Sharanji, uninstalling did not work.

The troubleshooting told me there was a network cable not plugged in.

I tried the other thing but can't right click to get to the Run as Administrator. Shift/F10 doesn't do anything.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Try this....
Go to "Control Panel". Next go to "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing".
Now click on "Manage Wireless Networks". On this screen, remove all wireless connections by "right clicking" on it and select "Remove network" from the drop down menu.  After doing this, close the open windows and reboot the computer.
Once the computer is fully reloaded, scan for the "WiFi networks".  Click on the available network that you want to access and select "connect".
It takes a moment, but then you will be asked to give a password for your WiFi connection. Type in the password and click the "connect" button.

    It should now be connected.
If this doesn't work, test seeing if your laptop will connect via Ethernet. If so, then your WiFi card may be going. You can either look to replace it/have it replaced, or get an external (plugs in via USB) WiFi card.

Another way to try it is to...
Go to "Settings". Click on "Network & Security" and then click on "WiFi". Now click "Manage known networks".
Select the WiFi connection you want to remove. Click the "Forget" button. After doing this, close the open windows and reboot the computer.
Once the computer is fully reloaded again go to "Settings". Click on "Network & Security" and then click on "WiFi".
Now click "Manage known networks". Click "Add a new network" and enter the network name.
Using the drop-down menu, select the "network security type". Check the "Connect automatically" option.
Now check the "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting" option and click "Save".
Once you have completed these steps, whenever the device is within range of that particular network, it should automatically connect to it.

If still unable to connect,  just go to settings to start a automatic troubleshooting and check for  any potential hardware problems.

    Thanks for getting back, Sharanji.

There is no "manage wireless networks" in the network and sharing center. It says I'm currently not connected to any networks.

I tried an ethernet connection but it said ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

I have no "network and security" option. There is System and Security and there is Network and Internet but neither have a Wi-Fi option.

I don't see a place in settings to start automatic troubleshooting.

This laptop is about 3 years old...has it outlived its usefulness? Is it hopeless?
