Hey Fellas.

I own a G9-793-78RV and I am looking at upgrading the ram. It currently has 16gb in one slot. If I get another 16gb stick which slot do I have to put it in for it to operate via dual channel. Can any of the slots in the access panel provide dual channel with the stick already installed under the keyboard?

Thanks for your help.

No. The pair of DDR4 modules should be in the pair of slots on the same side of mainboard. One pair of slots is on the bottom of the mainboard. The other pair of slots is on top of the mainboard. Hope your existing 16GB module is the easiest to access.  :) Jack E/NJ

Out of curiosity, why do you want to bump it to 32, for nearly all our latest games on Ultra @ full HD don't use even the 16 GB RAM to fullest extent!

Thanks for the responses. I believe the 16gb is in the hard to access spot unfortunately. Sri369 I wanted to add ram in dual channel as evidence shows you get much better performance having ram run in dual channel.

    Good you pointed it out...

If you have two different RAM in two slots, they both would run at speeds of slower RAM.
So, if you have a single channel RAM running at slower speeds, and now you place this newer faster RAM in the second slot, it won't help you for it would run at the speed of slower RAM. You would need to change both, or at the very least remove the slower RAM, to utilize the higher speeds of the new one.

Generally speaking, you can install a second RAM stick and the RAM will operate in dual channel mode. I say generally, because it is recommended you purchase "matched pairs" RAM to guarantee the RAM will work in dual channel mode because they have been verified to do so. Having said that, the chances of using unmatched paired of RAM (or mix and match) and still operate in dual mode is pretty good.

Typically speaking, you want both RAM sticks to be of the same capacity because that will give you the best performance. Especially if the RAM are matched pairs because they are guaranteed to work in dual channel mode with each other. However, mixing different RAM capacities is not the end of the world. There was an article I read couple of years ago which tested RAM used in dual channel mode. Basically, using unmatched pairs of different RAM capacities yielded about 95% the performance compared to using matched paired of RAM where both sticks are the same capacity.

Thanks for the response. I am confused with JakeE's response as I have seen videos and some other threads saying they have installed a new chip in the easy access panel and it runs dual channel. So one is under the keyboard (hard to access) and the other is in the access panel. Can someone please confirm? Is there an Acer document for my model which will tell me which slots are matched for dual channel? I want to confirm before making the purchase as accessing the ram under the keyboard will be a mission.

    Thanks.

The ram specs are dual-channel DDR4 SDRAM with up to 16 GB factory installed. Upgradable to 64 GB using four DIMM modules for
    quadruple-core CPU under 64-bit OS. Jack E/NJ

    JackeE.

CPU Z tells me the current SODIMM is in slot 3 which i suspect is 1601?. So if I got another and placed it in 1600 it should work dual channel correct?

    Thanks mate.

You guys are lucky, to have 4 slots. My G3-572 comes with only 2 slots :-( So, to upgrade, I would have to replace RAM, instead of just adding.

@Dutch_H Should really be a matched pair or at least the same specs. You should also be able to double-check CPU-Z by opening bottom RAM access panel to see if 1601 and 1602 are indeed empty. Bottom might be # 3 & # 4 if your lucky unlike @sri369 :) Jack E/NJ

    JackE.

I opened the access panel and there are no ram slots taken up. CPU-Z tells me the current 16GB SODIMM is in slot 3. So looking at the pic you shared that is either in 1600 or 1700. With Dual Channel if it is in 1600 do I need to place the other module in 1601 or 1701? Vise versa if it is in 1700?

    Thanks mate.

I'd put both modules in the easier to access pair. Should be 1601/1701 or # 1/# 2. On first boot, start tapping F2 to enter BIOS menu to make sure modules are both recognized. Save settings and exit. Jack E/NJ

Update. I purchased the G.Skill 16gb module. Installed in top slot and running perfectly. CPU-Z states dual channel. Performance in Battlefield 1 has increased dramatically. Little tip for anyone with one stick of RAM in single channel. Get another for dual and performance for games like Battlefield 1 will improve greatly. I want a steady 75fps for my monitor's refresh rate and was getting dips into the 30s. Now a steady 75fps at all times besides a very rare occasion such as flying a plane high and seeing the whole map with lots of action. Yet only a slight slow down and nothing like before. Very happy. Appreciate all the help and advice.

    Hi Dutch,

How much did the new RAM run you?  I'm seeing performance dips in Quake Champions and am thinking of upgrading down the line...

    Hey Goldark.

16gb SODIMM 2133mhz was $230 Australian. It is good to have 32gb yet it gets a bit rich when you go big capacity modules. I think 2 x 8gb would of been fine at this moment. However I already had one 16gb from the factory so wanted to keep it the same. I purchased the below ram in the link.

    Have a good day Bro.

    Here's some more info....
Note: The memory combinations below don't necessarily imply that other combinations aren't possible.  They are just the combinations that Acer listed in specs......and I assume they tested.

    I'm not an Acer employee.
