I just got this device a couple of hours ago and noticed that the back left side of the monitor get extremely hot to touch. To the point of it feels like it will burn my hand. Just there and no where else. Is this normal or is the unit faulty?

I also own a G9-793 with G-Sync I have never noticed any excessive heat on the display top case.  Right now it's on, although not doing very much, equally the top case is pretty much same as the ambient temp.

As much as it's painful.  There's no reason for the rear of the display to be getting so hot that you cant touch it.  Better to replace the unit than deal with RMA in the future.  Assuming that the exhaust vents are free of obstruction and not deflecting heat to the back of the display,

I thought the left side was a dummy insert and only the right side you had exhaust vents (on the back of laptop). But even in this case, just go ahead and get the piece replaced. Once out of that return time frame, dealing with RMA will give you headaches, not counting the number of days without laptop.

Predator 17 G9-793 has both left (GPU) & right (CPU) rear exhaust vents, with the cooling system being generally shared between the CPU & GPU.  G9-793 also has a 3rd optional cooling fan the FrostCore although seemingly doing little, however it helps to pull hot air away from the motherboard, which shouldn't be discounted given the GTX 1070 can pull as much as 125W under full load.
