My new Predator 17 came with 16GB of memory installed. I am trying to put 2-16GB sticks in the blank slots. If I put one card in the system shows 32GB, but If I put the second card in the computer freezes up. Removing the extra card and the computer now works.

As per the motherboard connectors there are two memory connectors on the top and bottom case on the motherboard.
    CON1600 & CON1700 on Motherboard top case, CON1601 & CON1701 on Motherboard bottom case

Hi, Acer Predator 17 supports Dual-channel DDR4 SDRAM. Computer came with 16 GB of DDR4 system memory and it can be upgradable to 64 GB using four so-DIMM modules for quadruple-core CPU under 64-bit OS. Ensure that you are using the same so-DIMM modules. Also try in serting the RAM to different available slot and check if it works in that slot.

Got this note from Acer Support:
In order to get the desired capacity (48GB)  it should be in this order:

     16GB in slot 1, 8GB in slot 2,
    8GB in slot 3, 16GB in slot 4
    or
    8 GB in slot 1, 16GB in slot 2,
8GB in slot 3, and 16 GB in slot 4

wonder if slots can be made to work independent?

I think I found the problem, but need advise if correct. Acer installed Single channel memory sticks in con 1600/1700 (slots 1/3 according to CPUID) while I am trying to put dual channel memory sticks into con 1601/1702 (slots 2/4). So far I can put one dual card in and get 32GB registering, but no two dual cards. The beat goes on.

    Here is what works:
    Slot 1/3 8gb/slot single
    Slot 2 16Bg dual
    Total 32 GB

    Here is what won't work:
    Slot 1/3 8GB.slot single
    Slot 4 16GB dual
    Computer will not boot.

So my gut says I have a bad memory card slot. Any advise?

Sending back to Amazon for replacement unit...... here is hoping and praying I get a good one this time....
and yes, the memory stick should have worked in both 1601 and 1701 slots....
