Here is the complete name and model number: Aspire Switch Laptop 2GB, 64GB SW5-012-1327. Are you going to need the serial number?

Don't need SNID. I'm leaning toward a hardware issue with the camera or its mainboard connector. Probably jarred loose and/or needs to be re-seated a few times. Perhaps the best way to rule this in or out without pulling the pad apart (not a trivial job), is to back up your current setup and do a factory re-set. This should answer the question if Win10 didn't wipe out the hidden ACER recovery Win8.1 partition on the hard drive. Jack E/NJ

Does a factory re-set, take it back to Win 8.1 or Win 10?  Would I have to reload all additional programs that did not come from factory? If the camera still did not work, then the next step would be to pull it apart, right?

Yes, back to 8.1 if the ACER factory recovery partition is still there. And yes, you'd have to reload if the problem resolved and decided to either stay with 8.1 or try Win10 from scratch again. If it didn't resolve, then you'd restore Win10 to where you are now from the backup. If it works, I'd probably try to stay with Win8.1 since you'd be guaranteed of maintenance updates till 2023.  With Win10, you have no guarantees your machine will even work properly with its next major update. Thanks, Jack, for you tireless effort.  I think at this time, that I will leave it all alone.  Everything else works on the computer, and I would hate to end up with a problem with that stuff, rather than just an annoyance of no camera. Thanks, again.

Prolly what I would do for now. I'd guess there's still a fair chance that it could've been caused by a Win10 update and may resolve as quickly as it seemed to happen with some future update. Let us know if it does. Jack E/NJ

If it starts working at some point in the future, I will update here as to what I find out.  I did go to a website, testmycam.net, and it required Adobe Flash player which I was surprised that I did not have. after adding this, the test said, "no camera found."

See if ViewPlayCap freeware can detect it. It's used for a bunch of different image grabbers like borescopes, microscopes, etc. Jack E/NJ

    • I downloaded it, extracted it, and ran it.  It said, Connect Devices!  The wizard did not find any supported devices. Please connect the devices you want to update.  At the bottom are two "light grey--can't push buttons" that say back and next, plus a black button that I can push that says "cancel." And that exits the program.  But it did say it was for USB camera....It was the first one on the list. www.imagingsource.com  Perhaps another one would be different?

I currently use ViewPlayCap v3. it seems to detect everythng whether it's internal or external. Mine is a downloaded compressed file, from www.kkmoom.com/pc.rar that came with a borescope. It's still there but your's is probably the same v3. Looking more and more like a hardware problem but there's still hope a future Win10 update will fix it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I finally got that to work.  I needed a program to open a .rar file.  The results were the same as before.  On the upper left a icon comes on and says "Camera on" but the screen is still black. After push the button to take a picture, that icon turns to "camera off" and gives error message. I also tried UsbWeb Cam from Google Play, (which said it was compatible with my device), but when installed it says, No eligible devices for app install.

If you have a strong stomach, try googling " SW5-012" "disassembly" with the quotes. Jack E/NJ

OK, I did.  I am not up for that.  With my luck, something else would break or come unattached, and then I would be without a working computer.  Thanks, it was interesting.  I have a friend who works on computers, and I will see him in October.  Maybe he can have a look "inside."

Open Control Panel. Search 'restore point'. Click 'create a restore point' in left pane. If System Protection is turned on in the box that pops up, click the System Restore button. Follow directions to reverse the bad update. Then follow this link to temporarily block the bad update from re-installing. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026726/windows-hide-windows-updates-or-driver-updates

The built-in camera is not even recognized in the "Device" menu - so instead of fixing the problem (known for at least 2 years), MS invented a tool for "blocking a bad update"?
"System Restore" button is gray = unclickable ....

Any Acer tool to help Windows10 the build-in camera to recognize and install correct driver, instead of going back to the old version of the system?

Unfortunately,  if System Protection wasn't turned on then the fix isn't straightforward. Major Win10 update releases can be a big headache. I suggest first downloading and installing iobit's DriverBooster freeware to see if it'll pick up any new USB device drivers since the camera is integrated with the bus. But before you do anything, make sure System Protection is turned on. Jack E/NJ

Ohh, so Acer leaves "big headache" to users? Good to know ...

Yes, just like Dell, Asus, HP and other major consumer computer manufacturers leaves big headaches to their users due to Microsoft Win10 updates.  Please first try the DriverBooster freeware. If still no joy, then we can try other possible fixes before doing an ACER factory reset which should fix the problem and give you a chance to turn on System Protection so that it won't happen again.
