Can I use 20GB SSD cache as a storage disk? I can't seem to find anywhere how to do it or if it's even possible.
My laptop is Acer Aspire M5-581T-6405, UEFI BIOS v2.09 .

Disassembling the laptop was quite an experience. Unfortunately there's no compartment to access the SSD cache or HDD for easy removal. To remove the mSATA SSD cache I have to remove the motherboard from chassis. There's a pesky screw upper left that holds the Wifi card hidden in a film which I almost broke  ;)  Masking tape used to hold all the cable were low quality, it left behind icky residue. Some taped spots weren't even necessary!
As for the HDD it's held on with brackets top and bottom, this where I put my new brand new samsung SSD.

First, uninstall or disable the HDD ExpressCache. Then you should be able to use the SSD space. Jack E/NJ

I'd also would like to install an OS and boot from it. But it's not being detected in BIOS or during Windows setup.

First, did you disable or uninstall ExpressCache yet? If yes, shutdown and cold boot your machine and make sure everything seems to be working OK without the cache. Jack E/NJ

yes I've even reinstalled windows and it still shows as blank. I used Diskpart command and it appears that it is indeed detected but shows as 0 space. Cleaning it, formatting it, etc doesn't seem to do anything.

2 disk, Disk 0 and Disk 1. Disk 0 has 3 partitions and Disk 1 has none.

I went ahead and bought a SSD to replace both the SSD cache and hard drive. I'm lead to believe it is not possible to use the mSATA SSD cache as storage disk without modifying deeper settings of the BIOS that are not available to almost all users... thanks a lot Acer :/

Jack I appreciate your help though!

OK. Can you right click on or find properties for non-initialized Disk1 with no partitions? If yes, first try to initialize Disk1 if needed. Then create a GPT partition on Disk1. Then format Disk1 to NTFS. I'm hoping you'll then be able to see a separate SSD in the BIOS. Jack E/NJ

I get an error unfortunately, I forgot the error info though as I have already removed and replaced the SSD cache and HDD with a brand new SSD.

Hey, probably saved almost a penny mfg cost using cheap sticky tape.  A million pennies here---and a million pennies there --- pretty soon adds up to the chairperson's next weekly bonus. Congrats. How did you transfer Windows system to the SSD?  Jack E/NJ

I used my old HDD as a external backup drive with all my personal data though I might need a proper enclosure for it at some point. As for windows 8 I should be able to reinstall it on new SSD and it will hopefully activate windows 8 automatically. If things don't go well I'll be sticking to a Linux Distro  :)

I'm using Mint Cinnamon now. Don't use Windows any more. Jack E/NJ PS: A proper HDD enclosure is an antistatic bag scotch-taped shut with the USB cable hanging out.
