Hi Everyone,

When I switch on I get some text on the screen then for a brief moment it asks to "normal start for Windows" I press enter and then all I get is a black screen. Has anyone got any ideas?

    Hi,
If it's a laptop try a battery reset, switch off the laptop, disconnect the AC adapter, follow the instructions in the video, leave the laptop to rest for a while before starting. Could you please post the model of your PC/Laptop and the OS.

Based on the info you've posted I believe that this is due to Windows Operating System failure. The reason for this can range from Virus, malware, a defective program or OS corruption.
I would recommend doing a PC reset to fix the issue, which would re-install the OS. However this will ERASE all of YOUR DATA/FILES on the device.

Now, if you do want to go ahead and do a PC reset,  please do the following.

    1) Shut down the device. (Press and hold down the power button for 5-7 seconds and it will force the device to shut down)

    2) Once it's shut down, give the device a few seconds to rest completely.

    3) (Now following 3 steps need to be done within a few seconds).

    # Press the power button once to reboot the device.
    # Press and HOLD DOWN the ALT key IMMEDIATELY after you have pressed the power button on the device and
    # Simultaneously keep TAPPING CTRL key repeatedly WHILE you're Holding down the ALT key.

You can let go of the keys once see the message "PLEASE WAIT" on the screen.

    4) A few seconds later, you will see a list of options on the screen. You need to select "TROUBLESHOOT".

    5) Now select, "Reset this PC"

    6) Then  it will give you two options: "Keep my Files" or "Remove Everything"

    7) While it might be tempting to select Keep my files, it will not fix this particular issue. So please select "REMOVE EVERYTHING".

    8) Then the system will give you some warning about losing your data/files and ask you to make sure the device is plugged in charging. Select OK to this.

    9) After a few seconds, it will give you another set of options, and here please select "FULLY CLEAN THE DRIVE".

    10) Then you will see 'Getting ready to re-install the PC' message.

    11) Now it will ask you confirm one last time if you want to reset the PC. Hit 'YES'.

Now the PC reset process will start. And since, we are fully cleaning the drive, it might take 2-3 hours. So please make sure the device is plugged in and charging. After the device is done resetting the PC, it will reboot one last time. After this you can go in and set up your profile as usual.

Thank you brummyfan2 and Spelunker for your prompt replies. It is an Acer Veriton desktop 5600G running Windows XP which a friend of mine was using. I also suspect that the person using it was also using the internet which is a no no for Win XP.I will do what has been suggested.
