Hello, the computer as stated in the header is not listed for Bios update related to Spectre/meltdown. Does this mean (a) such update is not needed, or (b) Acer is not going to support such an update? Thanks in advance for advise.

    What can you do today to protect yourself?

    Updates will be made available to address both vulnerabilities. We recommend you install these fixes as soon as they become available.
    In addition, we recommend you follow usual security best practises at all times:

    • Keep your anti-virus software up to date, and running at all times;
    • Make sure your internet browser is always kept up to date with the latest updates and fixes;
    • Avoid installation of unknown programs, or programs from a dubious source;
    • Visit only reputable websites with minimal intrusive advertisements and external content.

    Meltdown (CVE-2017-5754)

    The security issue known as Meltdown can be addressed with updates to the Operating System. Microsoft has made the required patches available via Windows Update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4056892/windows-10-update-kb4056892.

    Note that this fix may not be offered to all users via Windows Update, as it may cause severe system issues in certain circumstances. Microsoft will continue to update the fix to make it available to all users.

    Spectre (CVE-2017-5753, CVE-2017-5715)

    The Spectre issue consists of two different vulnerabilities. One can be addressed with updates to the Operating System, as well as your internet browser. The second part requires an update to the microcode of your processor, which Acer will deliver as a BIOS update for most affected systems.

    Microsoft has released a Windows update package to address the Spectre Variant 2 vulnerability on Skylake H/S, Skylake U/Y and Skylake U23e processors. Additional information and downloads for this update can be found at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4090007/intel-microcode-updates. If you attempt to install the update on an unsupported processor, you will receive an error message and the installation will be cancelled. Additional updates will be posted as they become available.

    Could you pls advise why the V5-471G is not listed for BIOS Update related to Spectre? Is this because the system is not susceptible or is this becasue Acer will not engage? Again, pls advise, thanks

    Hi,
    Microsoft has released patches for Meltdown and Spectre protection, so you don't have to rely on Acer alone, please read the first post in this link and download the update relevant to your CPU.
