Predator G9-791 Windows 10 update issues

Hi all,

Anyone else had an issue with the most recent windows 10 update? Been trying now for a month or so to update it, but with no success. It gets to 75% installing, then blue screens and restores the previous version.

What's particularly annoying is that it keeps trying to update and every time I get the same issue.

I went to Microsoft, then managed to completely brick my laptop, stuck on a 3 second boot fail loop! Thankfully I managed to get into the bios and boot from USB to get it working again, great job Microsoft!

I've tried putting it on a metered connection to stop the update, but it keeps trying anyway.

Anyone else get this issue? How did you solve it?

AVG remnants still seem to be in there but doubt they're causing the issue. However, a quick google search of "avgMonFlt.sys" does turn up suggestions that it might be involved.  https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000DleSAAS  I'll study it a bit more. You might want to take a look yourself. For now, I suggest that you try to find "avgmonflt.sys" on the C:\ drive and rename it to "avgmonflt.sy0" to disable it.  Jack E/NJ

Are there any restore points left after a successful update just before the issue started? Jack E/NJ

Do you have an anti-virus? If so, uninstall it before attempting the update again.

So, the restore point is from before the patch, so I have restored the original Windows, my issue now is that it constantly wants to update and always fails.

I did turn off anti virus on one of the attempts, it made no difference.

The problem is that windows update is already downloaded so windows will keep attempting to install...
Follow these steps to remove the update..

Note; I recommend using Microsoft Update Assistant before giving up on updates altogether.

    1. Go to This PC and open the partition you have your Windows installed on (it’s usually C:)
    2. Go to Windows folder
    3. In Windows folder, find the folder named Softwaredistribution and open it
    4. Open sub-folder Download and delete everything from it (you might need an administrator permission)
    1. Now go to Search, type update and open Windows Update Settings
    2. Go to Advanced Options and set Notify to schedule restart under Choose how updates are installed

Some folks would be grateful if Win10updates always failed. :)

You mean we now have a choice of giving up on Win10updates altogether?   That sounds good too. =)

    LOL!

I'm a security consultant so it's sort of my job to recommend updates 😂😂

Thanks for the above comments. Oddly enough I had an issue with the previous patch and downloaded the update assistant which fixed the issue. This time it didn't. I'll try deleting the downloaded file, downloading it again, turning off AVG and I'll let you know if it works!

Thanks again for all the input either way.

I didn't see this post when I started a new thread today. Do you have a NVME SSD installed?

I have 2 SSDs, one that came with the machine a 128GB Liteon SSD and the second drive which is a 1TB Sandisk SSD. Is that part of the issue then?

And I'm getting a bit mixed up. :) I'm starting to believe that these new-fangled nVME aren't quite ready for primetime. Jack E/NJ

No, I doubt 2 SSDs are part of your issue. And no, guess again. Cuz others do indeed have annoying failed update issues like this.  I assume you have no other non-Microsoft scanners installed now and you're still getting the problem. How far back do the restore points actually go? Jack E/NJ
PS: Long shot. How much freespace is on the Liteon?

Currently 23.4gb on main drive, has been higher, but think all this Windows messing about keeps eating space!

https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/542414/windows10-creators-updates#latest should be the same subject.

I did testing since the first release update of Win10 (I think redstone or so). I did a fresh install on the Samasung 950Pro as the only media in my Predator for testing and then tried to upgrade. I tried out all combinations of drivers/Raid or AHCI Mode. I found some equal postings in the www with other machines but also NVME SSDs and same problems.

So I really would like to know if somebody with NVME upgrade and OS installed on it has successfully did an update? Or successfully resetted windows?

Since you cloned the drive, does this mean the ALT+F10 recovery fails as well? Jack E/NJ

@Swiftblade 23GB should be enough for updates. If not I would assume it would automatically use the 1TB drive for temporary space it needs. Are any error messages whatsoever displayed? Jack E/NJ

The only error message comes just as it hits 75% install and its the standard blue screen of death message, nothing specific.
