Hi, I have an Aspire TC-705 Desktop. I've recently had problems as Windows 10 Creators Update won't install. It seems that the TC-705 is not on acer's list of tested and driver-ready PCs for this. Does anyone know if/when This PC will be on acer's 'OK' list?
Thanks!

Try zipping them and attaching the zip. I think that'll get past the restriction.

    1. What operating system originally came pre-installed on your computer?
    2. Do you have a graphics card installed?  If so, what card is it?

Hi Jordan B, It was Version 1607 (OS Build14393.2125) last time I looked, not sure what the original system was. Display adapter is AMD Radeon R7 240.

    Hello AllanMM,

I have a couple of TC-605 desktops.  For all practical purposes, the TC-605 and the TC-705 are the same computer.  Same mainboard.  I don't have any problem with Fall Creators.  I haven't heard of anyone having problems running Fall Creator with TC-705.

Can I ask you a couple more questions.....

    1.  Please go in to your BIOS settings and tell me what setting "Launch CSM" has.   Is it set to "Never" ?  Or is it set to "Always" ?

    2.  What BIOS version do you have ?  (You can find that in the BIOS settings)

    3.  When you're in the BIOS settings, can you write down the first ten characters of the serial number S/N and post them here.

    Hi Jordan B,
    1. 'Never'
    2. BIOS Version P11-B1 (08/07/2014)
    3. System Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    Baseboard Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

[Edited by Acer-David due to serial number posted publicly]

Was this the info you needed?

Ok, I'm going to give you instructions for updating BIOS.

    1. Download P11.B4
    2. Extract
    3. Copy the Win and ROM folders to a USB drive
    4. Open an Admin Command Prompt
    5. If your USB drive has a drive letter of F, then you would type

    F:
    cd win
    flash

    6. After the processing completes, restart your computer
    7. Enter the BIOS settings when prompted (press the Delete key)
    8. Load the BIOS defaults (F9) and then save/exit (F10)

After you update BIOS, trying using the Update Assistant. And make sure you're connected to router via ethernet for entire update process.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If the update doesn't work, I'll have another suggestion for you tomorrow.

Edit: If you're doing a clean install, make sure you backup all important personal files and delete all partitions before installing.

Hi, I successfully updated the BIOS, but after doing the first 3 phases (Download W10 Update, Verifying W10 Update, Getting your update ready once again ) the process got as far as 30% of 'Working on updates', before rebooting and then restoring the previous version of W10. Next suggestion please Jordan...

Would you be interested in starting completely over and only installing Windows 10 operating system?  And then having to re-install all of your programs.  Obviously you'd have to make sure you backed up your important personal files.  A clean install completely wipes your HDD first.

I can give you step-by-step instructions for a clean install of Windows 10.

If you don't want to do a clean install, you might consider contacting Microsoft and they might be able to help.

If you think your current Windows is corrupt, you can try link below.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026529/windows-10-using-system-file-checker

When I installed Windows 10 Fall Creator on My TC-605's, I just updated through Windows Update.  Everything went fine.  No problems.  I went ahead and did a clean install on one of them though.  No problems there either.  I don't think it's hardware thats causing your problems, but I can't completely rule that out.

Here's a link to Start Fresh......

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10startfresh

Edit: Are you interested in trying any of the suggestions in link below (that I gave you in a previous post).

Hi Jordan, I have contacted Microsoft and had them take control of my PC. ThEy tried various things without success. When they saw the 'working on updates' stage get to 30% and fail, followed by the previous version of W10 being re-installed, they concluded that it must be an 'incompatibility error'. They referred me to the page on the Acer website that lists out all the Acer machines for which the Creator's Update would work - not including my TC-705, of course. (The following Acer laptops, desktops and tablets have been tested as being suitable to install Windows 10 Creators Update. If your product model is not listed in the table below, Acer has not tested the device and the drivers have not been updated for that model.) Interestingly, the TC-605 isn't on that list either...?
Not sure I could face the consequences of wiping everything with a clean install. From past experience, it's nigh on impossible to get everything back to how it was.
Maybe I'll get to that point, but in the meantime, here's the results from the scans:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

    Version: 10.0.14393.0

     Image Version: 10.0.14393.0

     [===========================88.2%===================       ]

    Error: 0x800f0906

The source files could not be downloaded.

Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=243077.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

     C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc

    and...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired

them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For

example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not

    supported in offline servicing scenarios.

     C:\WINDOWS\system32>

I'll see if I can find the log files referred to, if so I'll try and paste the results in this thread...

Many thanks for all your help so far!

OK, it won't allow me upload the dism.log or CBS.log text files here, and there seems to be too much text in each file to copy here either...

I'm going to tell you the main (only) differences between your TC-705 and my TC-605s that I'm aware of.  I'll let you decide if you think if it's hardware that's causing the problem....and possibly you want to (temporarily) remove or disconnect it.  And then I'm going to give you instructions on how to wipe your HDD and do a clean install.  I'm also going to give you instructions on how to Reset your PC to factory defaults. I can't guarantee anything.

    My TC-605 #1

    1. Just uses Intel HD 4600 graphics that is on the i5-4440 CPU.  Doesn't have AMD R7-240 like yours does.
    2. Has an old school full size DVD.  Your computer probably has the newer thin laptop style DVD
    3.  Uses Qualcomm/Atheros AR5BWB222 Wifi bluetooth module.   Not sure what you have.
    4.  We have different card readers

    My TC-605 #2

    1. Uses Nvidia GTX 960 graphics card.    Doesn't have R7-240 graphics card like yours does.
    2. Has old school full size DVD.   Your computer probably has the newer thin laptop style DVD
    3.  Uses Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Wifi bluetooth module.   Not sure what you have for Wifi/bluetooth.
    4.  We have different card readers.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Reset your PC to factory defaults

    1. Backup your important personal files to an external USB drive.
    2. Create a USB factory recovery drive using Acer Care Center and put in a safe place.
    3.  Backup Drivers and Apps using Acer Care Center and put in a safe place.
    4.  Use Alt+F10 at boot to reset your PC or you can try it from the Acer Care Center.
    5.  After it resets, you can try upgrading to Fall Creator again.

If you have trouble, you can pull out your USB recovery drive and reset using it..........or order your recovery media from Acer.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to Clean Install Windows 10 Fall Creator (this will completely wipe your HDD)

    1.  Backup your important personal files to an external USB drive

    2.  Create a USB factory recovery drive using Acer Care Center and put it in a safe place.

    3.  Backup your drivers and Apps using Acer Care Center and put it a safe place.

    4. Create Windows 10 USB media using Microsofts tool

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

    5.  Go in to your BIOS settings and load the defaults and then save/exit

    6.  Go back in to your BIOS settings and enable the F12 boot menu

    7.  Boot the Windows 10 USB by tapping F12 at boot

    8.  When you see the screen below, press Shift+F10 on your keyboard to get a Command Prompt

    9.  At the Command Prompt, type

    diskpart
    list disk
select disk x     (x=your HDD/SSD that you want to wipe and install Windows on)  Be careful---don't select the wrong disk!!
    clean
    exit
    exit

    10. Install Windows 10.  Select Custom Install.  Click on the Unallocated Space and then click Next.....and the windows installer will automatically partition and automatically format and automatically install windows.

    11.  Most all of your drivers will be installed automatically.  After a couple days, if you're still missing drivers you can post here or check Acer's website.  However, most of the drivers on Acer's website will be too old.  It's better to use whatever Windows gives you through windows update whenever possible.

    Hi Jordan,
Very many thanks for all your suggestions, I really appreciate all the effort you've taken.
I'm going to have to think about this. After 3 years, I've pretty much got my PC set up exactly as I want it. I'm loath to go down a pathway that may leave me with a machine that I have to adapt again, install software again, etc, etc. On the other hand, if I don't install the Update, I guess my PC is exposed to whatever nasties there might be out there...
It's not a decision I thought I'd be making when I bought this PC, ho hum....

A few things you can try to help make sure it's ready and clean enough for the update...

From an admin command prompt run chkdsk on the C drive, chkdsk /f
Reboot and again from an admin command prompt run sfc, sfc /scannow
Reboot and last time from a command prompt try dism, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Reboot and try the update again. Those are all command that should muck with your settings, but could help if you have some corrupted OS pieces. Each of the commands will take a while to complete, so be prepared to wait them out. ;)

Hi Jordan. I've done the 3 operations above, just about to try the Update one more time...
