I bought costco acer spin 5 13 inch 2-in-1 2018 model with i5 8250U CPU and updated it to latest BIOS version 1.07. When I tried to dual boot with linux it did boot once into the thumb drive and later after i unplugged the thumb drive I am not able to login the UEFI settings at all. The system boot straight to Windows or holding F2 boot into a black screen and I can only shut down the pc from there. how do i bring the UEFI boot menu back?

Try leaving the bootable Linux thumb drive in when you hit F2 during boot. I have heard of an obscure problem with the Bios.

Actually i unplugged the thumb drive for a reboot and it hung at a blank screen like that.  I tried your suggestion before and even now it didn't work it still is a blank screen. I suspect a corrupt NAND memory. But somehow it does boot into windows. But I dont want to have a PC like this. If there is not going to be BIOS update to fix this , I think I should return the device ASAP. Is there anyway I can reach the developers and tell my problem so that it gets a fix?

Last night I tried the internal battery reset through the pin hole. It didn't work either.

More than likely, the problem is you disabled secure boot.  There seems to be an issue when people disable secure boot and try to install linux.  If you ever regain access to BIOS, please don't disable secure boot anymore.

I suspect the swift instructions in link below will work for installing latest Ubuntu or Mint on your spin.  Please don't disable secure boot.

Press and hold the SHIFT key and then restart your computer.

I did not disable secure boot. I tried the shift key. I tried the other thread. Nothing worked yet. Seems like there is some bug that needs some fixing in the BIOS.

The interesting thing is why the internal battery reset failed. Its supposed to reset and clear the user settings... but apparently it didnt help either. I had Lenovo, ASUS , Dell, HP, Samsung laptops and I have used linux, FreeBSD on my laptops exclusively for many years and never had problems with BIOS.

Try disabling the fast boot option in the power plan. Then don't hold the F2 key, start gently but rapidly tapping F2 after turning it on. Don't wait for the ACER logo screen because it's too late by then. If you're having trouble finding how to disable fast boot, completely shut off your machine by pressing and holding the power button for about 5 seconds. Then turn it on again and immediately start tapping the F2 key to access the UEFI bootstrappeer menu. Jack E/NJ

Sorry it still  doesn't work. F12 is working for now. If I ever need to reinstall or install linux, I can work through F12. But F2 UEFI options are lost forever, unless a fix is coming.

Completely shut the machine off again. Then press & hold 3 or 4 random keys. Then turn the machine back on while still holding all the random keys down. You should at least get POST error beeps or beep codes if not the BIOS menu. Jack E/NJ

Synapse fired and came across this note across this note:

"Windows 10 keeps the [Fast Startup] feature as Windows 8. (For more information, please refer to Windows 8-Introduction of [Fast Startup]) Due to the reason, you CANNOT press F2 to enter BIOS configuration when booting the system"

If you turn off Hibernation it will automagically turn off Fast Startup.

My advice is to ask @jici79 what to do.  He can help you.  Send him a private message.

Padgett, Jordan, JackE thank you so much for offering your help. But I have tried all your suggestions. Still unable to get into F2. F12 still works but not F2.

I have sent a private message to jici79.

Try this. Completely shut the machine off again. Then turn it back on and immediately press the FN key while tapping the F2 key. Report back. Jack E/NJ

I don't. But perhaps the F2 key may not be working for some reason. You might want to google "keyboard tester" and make sure it's working OK. Jack E/NJ

If you just want to start completely over........

    1.  Backup your important personal files

    2.  Create a USB factory recovery drive.

    https://uk.answers.acer.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/38145/~/windows-10:-create-a-usb-recovery-drive-using-acer-care-center

    3.  Boot the USB recovery drive........tapping F12 at boot.

    4.  Reset your PC....remove everything.

JackE the key works perfectly fine before and after booting up. Pressing the key f2 results in black screen during restart. After the OS boot up pressing the key activates the special air plane mode for my pc. The key works.

JordanB What does reset your PC mean? do you mean reinstall?
