I'm running Windows 10, Version 1709, OS 16299.192.  When I go to: Settings / Apps / Video Playback, the screen starts to flicker  black ,on & off. If I go out of Video Playback, the flickering stops. I have tried this several times, and it Always happens. Any suggestions?   Thanks!  Michael.

Are you running any apps when trying to adjust settings? Jack E/NJ

JackE...Hello. No: no apps are active. I just went into "Video Playback", and the flickering started...clicking out of Video Playback stopped the flickering...going back in, it started again...etc! I first noticed this a week or so ago, when visiting a PC Maker's Site...it became more prevalent over time, and in other Sites...it seemed to happen when using Google Chrome, so I uninstalled / re-installed Chrome...problem still there. I also installed Intel's program that checks for Updates, and it found / installed a few...problem still there!

So: let's say I give up on Windows 10, and go back to 8.1. I made an Installation Media USB, but (alas!) cannot determine how to use it: I went into BIOS, and 'thought' I'd asked the LT41 to Boot from USB, but it did not work...what about helping me to Reset the Gateway to Factory, using the USB?...this might be the Best Solution!!

     Thanks again.   Michael.

I'd say upgrading back to Win8.1 would be a very wise move. But before we try, I suggest you first run "diskmgmt.msc"  without the quotes to see what your HDD partitions look like. You should see 3. How are they labelled? Jack E/NJ

JackE...thanks: I've  been away for a few days...I'll run the program you've suggested, & let you know ASAP the results.

JackE...sorry I do not know how to show you what I see ( I assume there is a way to send it to you...!), but, under "Volume", there's: Disk 0  / 4 partitions : 1,2,5,6. Underneath this read-out, there's a series of boxes next to one another, that seem to address Gateway's presence here, and some indicate Recovery Partitions. Perhaps, a Good Idea, is to teach me how to send these 'screen shots' to good folks like you...! Thanks.

Heh, heh. That may be because the community's servers block screenshots & weblinks by users until they post a certain number of posts. I don't think I'll need it but you can send me a PM with an attachment if I do.

If the recovery partition is "healthy" according the the disk management program, you can follow this ACER video below for trying to recover Win8.1. Slight differences may exist between the ACER and GATEWAY recovery screens but you should have the option of saving your personal files. However, it's probably best to back up these personal files on a USB stick or other storage media and just select the option of totally restoring Win8.1 to its factory-fresh state.

JackE...thanks! I'll try it tonight. I live in Northern Maine, & the past few days / weeks (!), have been really cold and not-nice...so: I've been a little lax in attending to things other than keeping warm and not sliding off the roads...thus, the lag-time since last I answered your email...Michael.

Well Michael, I just checked Old Town conditions. It's now raining and warmer up there than down here in north Jersey. We had snow, then freezing rain almost all day. Be careful and good luck with the upgrade back to Win8.1! Jack E/NJ

    Yes...the weather's rapidly changing...we had about 6 weeks of 0-10F temps: a bit much!

So: without going into what's possibly way too much detail, here's where I am; let's assume that the Gateway Windows 8.1 Instillation Media USB that I made is OK, but that it is not 'easy' to use...on one screen, I'm seeing "Could not find the Recovery Environment", etc. If we assume that the hard drive will 'talk' (!) with my USB, how should I tell the computer to do it...it seems not to want to, left to itself...!

And: I just decided to buy a new 120GB HDD--a nice Toshiba, untouched and sealed-- and it'll be here by this Wednesday...I certainly assume that installing it & plugging in the Instillation USB will do the trick...back to Factory!

However, if everything goes haywire, is there such a thing as an OFFICIAL GATEWAY RECOVERY USB that I may purchase?

Thanks for your kind help, I certainly appreciate it!   Michael.

Michael---"Could not find the Recovery Environment". Is this the message you got from the ALT+F10 Win8.1 recovery procedure? If yes, then the Win10 installation likely wiped out the hidden recovery partition --- which often happens. So we'd now dependent on the installation stick you made.  The other possibility is to enter your machine's SNID on this page https://store.acer.com/en-us/extended/recovery/ to see if the eRecovery USB stick is still available --- I think the price is about $50 now. JackE...hello. I went to Acer & looked for Recovery Media...USB is $45. Ouch!  That's a bit rich for this Retiree...that's OK, tho: it's good to know it's there.

I've decided to install my new HDD, & run the 8.1 Instillation USB I made some months ago...hope it works!

Finally: is there any way to prevent Windows 10 from Obliterating (!) whatever OS it encounters as it installs itself? It really seems Weird that something is not available that will prevent Windows 10 from destroying that which it simply does not like...should not RECOVERY PARTITIONS be safe from this rather heavy-handed stuff...?

    Thanks again.   Michael.

Hi Michael---Quite frankly, it's almost impossible to guess what an installation might do if it's a default instead of a custom installation. And even if customized, the desired outcome isn't guaranteed. However, the biggest issue for many is the lack of control over automatic updates. Some of which have been rapid-fire, unpredictable major changes quite unlike the previous stable updates and service packs of earlier Windows versions --- Win10 updates are almost like completely new Windows versions that can and have crippled relatively new systems that worked flawlessly for years on Win8.1 or Win7. And some of the major updates that currently work fine on a particular machine, may not be supported later this year after the next major update is released that may or may not work on that particular machine. A crapshoot. So, if you can get your machine back on Win8.1, at least you'll have some assurances that it will have relatively stable updates & support till 2023.  What happens after that is anybody's guess. Perhaps Linux or Apple systems will be running on most new computers sold in the US by then. Jack E/NJ
