Just bought this new got it out of the box and started it up well from that moment on things went downhill. Laptop just froze after 10 minutes of setting it up so powered down after waiting 2 hours to see if it was going to sort itself out. Got everything sorted but on checking event log noticed 28 enteries of SystemSettings.exe. Anyone know what could be the cause of this error. I'm sure its got something to do with windows update because when i go to Update and Security then it doesnt load and i get a memory error message. Sometimes it works ok but most times it hasn't.
Thanks for reading this.

Looks like you got stuck with a Windows 10-64 device with a non-upgradable 32GB Flash drive. Frankly you would be better off taking it back and getting something with at least a 64GB drive. If all else fails then you might look here.

Yeah i have that 32GB laptop my main problem is i dont find it stable at all. Wonder if i'd be able to return it as unsuitable that's the question. Back on my trusty old Sony Vaio as i used the Acer before and ended up powering down coz it just hung again for 2 time in 3 days.  Same sort of behaviour/error.

Hung as in stopped responding or hung as screen went blank ? If former does ctrl-alt-del allow you to select Task Manager ? If latter I'd suggest you return as defective.

ps have seen initial update take overnight but if complaining about memory that is different.

Padgett hung as in blue screen saying [again] configuring windows don't turn computer off then hour later still same screen ctrl-alt-del no good pressed power button to shut laptop down. this is 3rd time since it was taken out of the box. 1st time was even on 1st ever boot. All i done yesterday was uninstall norton. I like the laptop but the memory error messages are concerning me enough to think the emmc flash drive has a problem.

Have had it take overnight before and I am on a fat pipe. Took two days to get the Spin 1 updated. Do you have at least 12GB free space ?

    Hello P.

Space wise i'm hovering around the 11.5 gig mark but will claw somemore back after uninstalling nonsense stuff etc and running disk cleaner/ccleaner etc etc. this is my 1st go with Windows 10 after using XP/7 for 10 years. Connection isn't great though [10 megs at best] but getting back to laptop well i assume the memory error/systemsettings errors & windows update errors I've had are perhaps linked. Notice WU has 2 failed updates a VLib &Cab file update so i'm going to find info out about the WU problem and start with that. Any ideas about the failed updates + WU not working properly??.

I've gone about as possible to get 12-14GB free (keeps varying) even with keeping the 1GB recovery partition and a Solid Windows 10-64. So it is possible but a lot of work and needs constant tuning.

Am now looking into Linux as a better choice for 32GB devices, used Fedora (Red Hat) & KALI for years. Only trouble is that my Spin 1 has an Apollo Lake processor that does not like GRUB. So far have only gotten Manjero to load properly & trying rEFInd as an alternative. Still a work in progress though, may have tonight or in a month just do not know how much tweaking it will take. Fortunately I have A Lot of 4GB and 8GB flash drives.

    P.

You said in earlier post it took 2days to get spin updated what that just installing the updates & restarting it coz if so maynes I wasn't allowing enough time for it to reconfigure laptop hence why I powered it down coz it looked to me like it had stopped responding and maybes I wasn't giving it time to do it's stuff?. Also turning hibernation off does that slow down the laptop or have a knock on effect?.

Two things I turn off on all devices are hibernation (c:\>powercfg.exe /hibernate off) and fast start (turning off hibernate also turns off fast start. This reduces disk space by several GB and makes for a more stable startup.

Yes I have left machines overnight to finish rumination. Most of the time there is some indication of activity (unfortunately many modern machines do not have a disk activity light) but not always. Have seen machines just sit there for long periods and I am on a fat pipe. My Bay Lake tab I have not turned on for a while just took all day yesterday (and a 16GB NTFS flash) for the Fall Creators Update (1709).
