Acer TC-780 16610 windows 10 Home 64 Version 1607
Bios version R0-A1

Last weeks my system wants to update to V 1709 but fails to install
After successful download and installing there is an error code.

The error code is
0x8007042B-0x4001E

I tried the following several times, because it should resolve the update problems for 100% (obviously not)

services.msc / windows update  -Stop
c:\windows delete software distribution folder
restart pc
settings - update security - check for updates

I uninstalled my McAfee virusscanner, only windows defender is active

This problem is very annoying because some days the download and installation happens 2 or 3 times.
Do I have to update to the new version, if not how can I stop this cycle?
Do I have to do a clean install and if so where do I get the right version?

Thanks for your help.

How much space do you have free on the hard drive? Do the setup logs show any more detail as to what was happening when the error occurred? What kinds of peripherals do you have connected during the install?

OK, so it's not the simple stuff... Take a look at the logfile in $Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\UnattendGC (I think the file is setupact.log) and see if you can see which operation failed.

I am having the same problem. I have an AM3970-U5022 desktop. The upgrade from 1607 to 1703 has failed at least 5 times. I found the setupact.log file from the last failure but when I try and open it in Notepad I get "Access denied".

So I found out how to open the file - copy it to another folder and open it from there. Nothing stands out in it as a problem. This is the output from the last failure:
    2018-01-27 11:34:43, Info                         [svchost.exe] Enter WinReIsWimBootEnabled
    2018-01-27 11:34:43, Info                         [svchost.exe] Parameters: pszWinDir: NULL
    2018-01-27 11:34:43, Info                         [svchost.exe] Exit WinReIsWimBootEnabled returns 0 with last error: 0x0
    2018-01-27 12:23:35, Info                         [svchost.exe] Enter WinReIsWimBootEnabled
    2018-01-27 12:23:35, Info                         [svchost.exe] Parameters: pszWinDir: NULL
    2018-01-27 12:23:35, Info                         [svchost.exe] Exit WinReIsWimBootEnabled returns 0 with last error: 0x0

No failures in that snippet, likely that's showing part of the cleanup operation. The failure itself is likely much earlier in the file.
