Is there an external DVD drive I can get for my Acer Chromebook to play DVD movies?  Will the Chrome operating system support this?

You must download and install VLC player to use an external USB DVD drive. https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-chromeos.html

Chromebooks with VLC installed can play video & audio files from a USB DVD drive but currently not rental DVD disk movies directly. It's much easier and cheaper to simply buy a portable DVD movie screen player from Walmart or Amazon for less than $50. These dedicated movie DVD screen players aren't any bigger a USB DVD drive plus there's no wires needed to hook up the screen player to the Chromebook. Jack E/NJ

Just noticed from 2018. Chrome has changed and VLC no longer works.

And now you not only get a player & screen, you also get a color-coordinated carrying case, headphones & choice of colors. Welcome to Wal mart. 🙂

After about an hour I could not make a USB DVD player work on my 317 Chromebook. However saving to a flash drive as an .mp4 worked fine.
