"fast-speed internet" requirement

One of the Acer 15" Chromebook listings has a disclaimer that the tablet requires fast-speed internet.  I have a "starter internet pkg" service with my local carrier.   It is 6x faster than dial-up.  Would this be sufficient?

Sure, though you will see lag and stutters if you try to watch videos online. 6x dialup is only about 300Kbps at best and video streaming really wants much more (say 3Mbps or 10x more than you have). For browsing, email and such it'll work but be limited to what your connection provides. You will see the same speeds on the Chromebook as you with any other device.

it depends how much is 6x...by the way, anything around 4000kbps will work.
    I'm not an Acer employee.

Billsey...Thank you.  I checked my internet account stats and it says "UP TO 5 Mbps download and up to 1 Mbps upload".  I'm assuming the key # is 5 Mbps for my question.  Please forgive my "tech-challenged senior citizen" mentality.   So, I should be okay for browsing and email ?

When your ISP says up-to 5MBPS, your internet can only reach 5 or around MBPS which will be suffice for browsing the internet, watching YouTube videos at 480-720p.

One more cool fact here is that when you pay for 10MBPS and notice your download ratio is just 1MBPS, it's normal. Your ISP splits your internet among users in your area so if you're the first person to use internet in your place, you'll easily enjoy the full speed of the exchange, but when time progress, it will slow down and reach the 1MBPS standpoint mano. ;)

5Mbps is reasonable for most internet browsing and lower resolution video. You'll want to test your actual speed though, the "Up To" portion means that 5M is feasible under certain conditions, but not available without those conditions. (I'm guessing you are on ADSL, not dialup. DSL speeds are dependent on distance from the central office and the farther you are away the worse the speed is.) Go to something like the speedtest.net site and see what you are actually getting. Check both during low usage hours (early morning maybe) and peak usage hours (just after dinner) to see if they've also got your section over subscribed.
