Hi all. I have an old Acer Aspire 8735g laptop that I wish to upgrade. I have recently added an SSD drive, 2Tb storage HDD and increased the RAM to 8Gb.
I wish now to upgrade the processor. It has a T6600 type fitted. I wish to install a faster processor that is capable of utilising VT-x instructions. I am considering either a T9550 or an x9100. I believe both are 1066MHz FSB (which MB supports) and both are capable of VT-x. Can any one see any problems with these suggestions and HOW do I turn on VT-x in BIOS (no option available).
Any help much appreciated.

Congrats. Good show and choice on VMWare. I hesistated to mention VMs cuz most folks don't want to consider them for some reason. I'm in fact running VMWare on mine with Win98SE, WinXP & SuSE as guests so I can use software and older hardware that won't work right or at all under the newer WinVers. And they all can run at the same time and inter-communicate thru the network. Todays CPUs are so fast that these guests seem like they're running natively. Jack E/NJ

You might try to set a BIOS supervisor password to see if any additional options become available. Here's the cpu specsheet for your model. Jack E/NJ

Thank you for your help JackE. How do I set a Supervisor BIOS password?

Tap F2 on a cold boot to enter the BIOS menu again. Go to the SECURITY dropdown to set a supervisor password. Then F10 to save settings and exit. After booting into Windows, shut down normally. Then tap F2 again on a cold boot to enter the BIOS menu again --- you will be asked for the supervisor password to get into the BIOS menu. Check to see if additional BIOS options are shown. Hi JackE, sorry for the delay in responding. I created a supervisor password as directed, but this has not revealed any more options in the BIOS. I have attempted to update the BIOS using the windows tool from the ACER website, but it reports an error. (V1.04 installed, V1.07 update).
    Any ideas?
I have ordered a T9550 off the net (socket P SLGEE 478 Pin) This supports VT-x but will be useless unless I can turn the function on in BIOS.
    Any further help much appreciated.

No guarantees but these options might change when the processor that can support it is installed and detected. I would however resist the temptation to update or otherwise modify firmware on a perfectly functional machine unless you are sure the firmware change specifically addresses what you want to do. It's too risky.    https://us.answers.acer.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/32650#_ga=2.135040369.1528063585.1510833831-1147057196.1510833831  Jack E/NJ

JackE, Managed to get hold of a T7 variant chip not listed as supported by the MB but which has VT-x. Installed it and to my amazement it worked! Nothing changed in the BIOS (still no option to enable VT-x) but I can now use VM ware to create 64bit VM's.
Will swop CPU for T9550 when it arrives.
Thanks for your patience and support.
