  • I would suggest updating to the latest Windows, because there is no real way to stop the updates anymore and for various performance/security issues.. Once you update, Reset Windows and we can go from there.

I used to encounter some bugs and sluttering issues with 1709, but many of these issues seem to be fixed now. Overall performance is a bit better than 1607.

Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

I didn't fix them, microsoft had. The first time when I updated to 1709 from 1607(used 1703, but then rolled back to 1607) it made my games slutter and reducing my fps overall compared to 1607(anniversary). Then recently I had to update to 1709 even if I knew that it was going to slutter, but surprisingly there was no slutter and overall fps in games is also a bit higher than it was on anniversary. I am not using helios 300, so it might be different for you, but I still suggest you to try it out. If 1709 isn't better, within 10 days(might be 7days I am not very sure) you can roll back to 1607. Security is also important, so keeping windows up to date is needed.

  • I suggest updating (BIOS too) and resetting (for best security and performance code). It is likely drivers and program incompatibility that is causing the lag and stuttering right after updating. I would reset windows, and then using Device manager check for Intel Driver updates, then download the latest NVIDIA driver from their web site. There are also other drivers like the Audio, touchpad, and Intel ME drivers that will need reinstalled. After everything is updated, you should go and disable the Intel Graphics Control Panel Desktop Context Menus.

I get slight delay every once in awhile when browser or opening Windows explorer, which kinda feels like lag when SSD/HDD is being used/turned on. Otherwise, it is extremely smooth with no slowdowns.

Update the nvidia driver manually. I still use 388.71, because I can't still find information of how the 390.65 performs. 390.65 is a security update against spectre to help Intel and AMD, so if you are concerned, you have to update.

About the intel sign, I think you are referring to the intel hd graphics control panel icon. By right-clicking on desktop, you can access the intel hd control panel.

About the freezing, go to this post. The solution is located in section 4.

If these issues don't appear in previous versions of windows, then it most likely is an issue with the OS.

I don't think this is a hardware problem to return the laptop. Use this link to update your Nvidia driver and download and install the lastest Intel driver from Acer here.
