Aspire 7735Z "plugged in" and "no charging"

This has Windows 7.
Previously my problem was my battery didn't last long, so new battery purchased.
All seemed well, apart from when the battery got to 80% charging stopped. I couldn't see any entry in BIOS or Windows suggesting any battery care monitoring to limit charge.
I then carried out a battery driver reset by:
1 Shut down laptop
2 Remove Power supply
3 Remove Battery
4 Plug power in, so no battery installed
5 Booted, went to device manager and uninstalled the battery drivers "Microsoft AC Adapter" and "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery". The third item "Microsoft Composite Battery" wouldn't uninstall.
6 Shut down
7 Removed power supply
8 Inserted battery
9 Connected power supply
10 Started Windows
The battery status showed 49 or 50%. Not sure if this was after a while of running, I can't remember.
I discharged the battery a few times, once on the BIOS screen, and the battery will only charge to 49% before stopping.
I carried out steps 1 to 9 again without starting. I left the power supply connected and in less than a minute the blue LED on the laptop indicated fully charged again.
I carried out 1 to 10 again and after booting the battery icon said "Plugged in and not charging" without any battery % indicator. The checked the devices under battery in Device Manager had reinstalled themselves.
I plugged in the power supply and the Icon now told me 36% and charging. After charging to 50% it said once again "Plugged in, not charging".
Any insight from anyone would be appreciated.

Many thanks for your interest.
Yes, it is new, the old one would last around 10 minutes.
The new one is a no-name Model:5520. 11.1V 5200mAh
Does that explain why it should get stuck previously at 80% and now reliably at 50%?
I just put the old one back in and it said straight away 82% plugged in and charging. Though it also says 'Consider changing your battery'!
Its now 84% and is still charging.

This indicates the 'old' battery's internal controller has an issue accurately reporting its state of charge to the operating system. It may not be a huge issue other than an innaccurate battery meter and possibly inadvertent shutdown if its low battery detection circuitry is compromised.
I would judge both the old and new battery's condition more by how much time you can typically get out of it before you either get a low battery alarm or the machine automatically shuts down when a critical discharge level is reached. The new battery will probably get better and better as it is cycled more. Jack E/NJ

Its a new battery. It went from 80%, down to 50% after cycling the drivers as per above, and it's now up to 53%. This does seem a perennial problem with Acer laptop batteries.0

Perennial problem? What do you mean? Did you purchase the no-name battery model 5520 from ACER? Jack E/NJ

Hijacking this thread as I have a related problem on the Switch 12 SW5-271-69LN. The machine will shut down without warning at 50% or so. I try to 're-calibrate' by cycling as recommended in a few places but it quickly gets the 'Plugged in not charging' message at anything between 40% and about 60%.
The 'solution' above involves opening the case so reluctant to try that. Any suggestions?

graham---Ignoring the battery meter, about how many hours does the battery actually run after charging it overnight for example? Jack E/NJ

2 hours tops I would think.

First, Google "switch 12" "replacement battery" with the quotes. Second, Google "switch 12" and "disassembly" also with the quotes. 8^) Jack E/NJ

Thought so, thanks. Got to try the extended guarantee first which in still in force. It excludes 'user-replaceable' batteries. Wish me luck.

For good luck, print this label and affix to your machine. 8^) Jack E/NJ

What I mean is this seems a common problem with Acers, though I see others have this problem too.
After a few discharge/charge cycles I now get a max of 48%. We seem to be going backwards.

Mikexx---How many hours actual running time do you get on the new battery alone after it's been charged overnight? Jack E/NJ
