Yes you can upgrade the memory and install a M.2 SSD, migrate the OS to SSD and use the original HDD for storage, I would suggest you to install CPU-z to find out the type of memory in your laptop (whether it's DDR4 2400MHz or 2133MHz), then buy the matching module with same specs or you can use Crucial system scanner to find the right upgrade.
There's a slot for M.2 SSD in between memory modules and the HDD bay( you can view this once the service hatch is opened), you could install a M.2 SATA SSD and it will definitely work, if you want to install a NVMe SSD, you need to find out the Maximum Link Width of your PCI Express Root Port, this has been discussed in the link below showing how to use HWiNFO64 to find out.

Yes, it doesn't matter whether you get NVMe SSD or SATA SSD for general usage, NVMe will be faster for transferring large files, so I would suggest you to get M.2 SATA SSD.
