Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571 Overclocking

It is VERY frustrating that I cannot overclock my GTX 1060. I want to know if this will ever get changed, I feel almost like I'm being ripped off! I have tried many different applications to overclock the GPU but it seems the controls to the GPU are completely locked up and unable to be accessed. In all my gaming, my fan speed has never gone over 70% of its maximum speed and the GPU temp has stayed in the mid 60s. I don't understand why it is locked, and why predator sense is not updated so that overclocking is built in. Will someone please help me understand why this is happening???

Also, If anyone knows a way I can bypass this GPU lock I would LOVE to know how.

You can simply install MSI afterburner or any other program for overclocking and overclock the GPU yourself.
Always post the following characterisitcs of the device:
    -Model number
    -Part number(not required, but helpful)
    -CPU
    -GPU
    -Operating system

Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

Hi use MSI afterburner which I personally use to overclock my acer nitro 5, but before starting overclocking your gpu be careful about overclocking limits as the overclocking capability of laptop gpu s are limited in comparison to desktop gpu s. Watch some tutorials and videos on it and yeah MSI afterburner also comes with requiring another utility software to be installed i.e. riva tuner which is useful too as it helps in monitoring cpu, gpu, fps stats

If you install MSI afterburner, all the options to access the GPU are locked, and YES I have enabled control in the settings, they are just inaccessible.

I have tried both MSI afterburner and EVGA ocx and both don't allow me to access my voltage setttings.

Voltage cannot be changed but core speed can be overclocked with MSI afterburner, memory speed can also be overclocked with MSI afterburner but I would definitely start slow, like AvikDe said laptop gpu limits are less than desktops.

So here is the thing, why doesn't predator sense already allow overclocking? Here is what it says straight from ACER helios 300 page:

    Realized Potential
Conquer the competition with the latest 7th Gen Intel® Core™ i71 processor and overclockable NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 graphics.

Then they have the blimp that says overclocking, and when you click it, it shows that the laptop is overclockable through predatorsense.

Now before anyone jumps and says the 572 model is the one that can be overclocked, it doesn't specify which model on their helios 300 page, so all helios 300 models should be overclockable through predatorsense.

Would like to hear what an ACER OFFICIAL has to say about this.

This is advertising. There is a reason why there are 4 different variants of helios 300. G3-571 is with plastic fans, which is worse than metal 3D fans at creating airflow(according to Acer) and therefore overclocking is not possible.

    G3-571 - No Aeroblade 3D fan - Non-overclockable
    G3-572/3 - Have Aeroblade 3D fan - both overclockable
The 17inch Helios 300 - More room and metal fans=even better cooling, so it is overclockable.

Conclusion: G3-571 is not overclockable, because it has plastic fans with less airflow. When you found out that the laptop isn't overclockable, you could just return it back during the test period.

You keep bringing up this argument about plastic vs metal fans when in reality the metal fans are just a gimmick. OP is literally saying that his temps are in the mid 60s so thermals are clearly not an issue for him.

I never said metal fans are better than pastic. I simply explained the reason why g3-571 doesn't have overclocking. A cheaper model has to have something less than the more expensive one, otherwise everyone will just buy the cheaper version.

So again, its just an artificial reason why the g3-571 cannot have overclocking. The hardware is the same in all of those laptops (Specifically, the GPU). Its one thing to say that it cannot OC because the 1060GTX in the 571 is different than the one in 572, which would be a valid acceptable reason. But its really infuriating when the users know that the hardware is capable of overclocking, and Acer is just being lazy/ don't care enough to update predatorsense to make the feature work.

One last thing to add. These 65C he gets on a game, the GPU might not run at 100% load. If it runs at 100% load the temperatures will get much higher and be advised that the CPU also generates heat and when the CPU is hotter, the GPU will get hotter too.

They are not lazy, they just don't want to, because they have to keep this model under the other helioses.

So I have not been keeping up with this thread, but I would like to add some things to this. I agree with Siloh751 on this. I am playing very demanding games, such as shadow of war and rise of the tomb raider, and my fan speed has never gone to 100 percent. (not to mention you can toggle boost fans in the predatorsense app if it needs to go even faster) and my GPU temps never go higher than 70 degrees at the very highest. So if you ask me, it really is just laziness from Acer that the GPU isn't overclockable, and frankly its infuriating.

I have played crysis 3, witcher 3, doom on all ultra settings and have got fps similar to all other laptops with gtx 1060 6gb in them, I have the same model g3-571, also have seen the GPU stay at 99% utilization with demanding games like witcher 3.

Some got lucky with a laptop that runs cool, but it seems many are not this way (mine had mid to hot temps up to 93C). It takes more work for Acer to make a separate bios that is locked down vs leaving them all unlocked, so it is not really laziness and more of stability and marketing for their higher priced alternatives.

With how hot my laptop ran out of box, I think it was wise to not enable overclocking, even if I would rather have the ability to.

And sadly, I doubt if we will ever see it with all the complaints they receive about the laptops running hot.
