I have an Aspire m1201 (Y2008) with AMD Athlon 64x2 4450e 3MB ram born with Windows Vista. I want to install Windows 7 Home Premium, and it's not an upgrade as I have already formatted the HD. In the end of the installation an unknown error occurs. I have tried with another HD with same result.
I have of course done some searching for a solution, and found that it could be related to the BIOS, so I looked for an update, and found one at ACER's support page, - 2009/08/24 R03.B3 (called 03/02/2009 R03.B3 in BIOS setup). I still get an error.

so you were able to update the BIOS or not?
can you please report the specific error message?

Yes BIOS is updated. Using Rufus, an USB stick and the files from ACER
It's not a specific error. The error occurs is the end of the installation, when services are being started. The alert is saying " The computer restarted unexpected or an unexpected errror occured. The installation cannot continue. Press OK to restart the installation". As the text is translated fron danish, it can be different from the original english text

    Is windows 7 SP1 version?
Have you tried with just 1 ram stick inserted?

    "Win7_Pro_SP1_Danish_x32.iso" bought from LizenGo.
No I haven't tried with only 1 Ram. Do you mean 1 MB? Why do you think that could be a solution?
So install with 1 MB ram, hope it works and then mount the rest of the ram!

no, i mean...if your laptop has 2 ram sticks (2x1GB), you can try to install with just 1 ram stick (1GB)
it's worth a try if one of the ram stick is having issue and can corrupt your windows installation.
you can also try to load factory default settings on BIOS, press F2 key to enter, then press F9 key to load defaults and F10 to save and exit; then (if needed) boot again to BIOS and modify to your needs.

So my Aspire m1201 (Y2008) will not cooperate with Windows 7.
    I have now tried:
    • with another HDD
    • to update BIOS to latest avaible version I can find @ ACER
    • to play with the RAM modules. The PC is equipped with a 1 GB and 2 GB module. 1, 2 or 3 GB doesn't work.
    • to reset BIOS to factory seetings
Do I have to forget about the computer and send it to recycling?

You could try starting over.  Except this time choose "custom install".  Delete all of your partitions.  Don't try to format manually.  Just click "next" and the windows installer automatically partition and format your Hard drive and install windows.

ok, I guess you could forget about windows 7 and try installing lubuntu.  Download Lubuntu Intel x86 iso desktop cd..  And then use rufus to create your USB media.

Edit:  oops, use File System NTFS instead of FAT32 if FAT32 doesn't work.

    Thanks JordanB
I know Ubuntu and I find it very good. I will try to convince the users, - I suppose that'll be easy. I mean: Scrap the computer or try Ubuntu

Yes, on a really old laptop, sometimes linux is the best choice due to security reasons.  On some older laptops lubuntu will work better than ubuntu (faster, more compatible).

It's amazing how computer prices have come down in recent years.  You get much more bang for the buck with a new computer.
