Acer R3-131T Can't recover windows

I have a Acer R3-131T. It has been working fine for 9 months. It came with Win10 and it's had all the various automatic updates from Microsoft.

Yesterday, it was booted up to a screen indicating the PC/Device needed to be repaired.

Depending on when it boots, there are several different error messages, including:

a config\system error 0xc000014c and a ntoskrnl error 0xc0000221.

The indication from various parts of the internet was that to fix this I needed windows install media (obviously in this case on a USB key) and then I could fix the MBR and run CHKDSK from the command line.

I entered the UEFI and changed boot order around so the USB HDD was first in the order.

However, I seem to be unable to get it to boot off my USB key. I had one already made on a USB3 sandisk key. I couldn't get that to boot so I made another one (directly onto the USB key) via the media creation tool. I am in the process of downloading the ISO and writing it to the USB3 key again after re-formatting.

Is there something inherent with my R3 laptop that it can't boot off USB? I can't seem to figure out what else I should be doing so I can get to the recovery menu and actually fix my laptop.

Have you tried the internal recovery method ? With the PC off, hold down ALT and F10 then press the power button. Under the Troubleshoot option should be Reset your PC or Refresh your PC.

When I use the ALT-F10 method I end up at the same menu as before. There's no 'troubleshoot' optionIMG_20170926_185142596.jpg

The UEFI also seems to indicate there's no GPT Recovery partition.

When I try to boot off a freshly made (and reformatted) USB key, it doesn't even boot into the windows setup environment:

Since I couldn't even boot into windows off the USB key, I suspect the issue isn't with the SSD.

I'm currently running the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool off the same USB stick. Even though it's not complete, it lists 'Hardware problems were detected'.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting beyond that?

if your laptop has USB2.0 ports, use them instead of USB3.0

keep in mind that the USB flash drive must have GPT partition scheme and FAT32 format to be recognised.

on BIOS the first bootable device must be Windows boot manager and not the HDD and i suggest you to enable F12 boot menu on BIOS, so at the next boot (with the USB flash drive plugged in) you can press F12 key and choose the USB flash drive from the bootable list (will be listed as Brand/Model name)

I am able to "load" off the USB key (now a USB2 key in a USB2 port). I can select which version of windows I want to boot with (32 or 64 bit) but whichever I pick, it shows the black and white "Windows failed to start" screenshot I posted above indicating notskrnl.exe is missing or corrupted.

THis is the same error I received (on a blue screen I posted above), which makes me believe there's some other hardware issue.

Again, I have since run the windows memory diagnostics tool and it indicates hardware issues as soon as it starts its scan.

if memory scan gives you errors, you need to check the ram sticks; nothing else to try.

Definitely some memory related issues (memtest86 ran last night)
