Switch Alpha 12 - Possible keyboard connection damage

My computer's not even a month in my hands yet, having been shipped overseas to me from the US (I live in the Caribbean). The machine itself still works fine, but from the time I got it I noticed that the keyboard would occasionally disconnect, requiring that I sometimes physically separate the keyboard and re-attach it, only for it to immediately happen again. Eventually I realize it was the angle of the board; when it's laid flat, it has no issues, but when it's in the angled position, it won't register unless something's touching the base exactly where the contacts lie.

I've tried:

  • Cleaning both contact points. No effect.
  • Installing the keyboard driver fix that Acer released. No effect.
  • Restarting. No effect.
  • Adjusting the keyboard position. This is the only consistent fix I've found, and actually seems to be affected by the cable inside. As in, I can press on the cable rather than the base of the contact point and acheive a connection, but it usually requires several attempts to get the connection to remain stable, and I end up having to lay the kayboard flat to maintain it.

So it looks like the issue isn't in the contacts themselves, but the cable connecting the keyboard base to the contacts. As I've said, I don't live in the US, so taking advantage of the warranty might be difficult, especially as I'm a university student that needs this machine to get the majority of my work done on campus (This was a replacement for my defunct HP laptop). I'd really appreciate any suggestions that might let me resolve the issue myself, or barring that, any information regarding replacement keyboards being sold by Acer (I haven't been able to find anything about this option on the internet).

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Sorry you are having problems with your Switch 12. Based on the info provided we would recommend repair for this issue, as fixing the cable is not something we could walk you through or advise on how to fix. Please contact Acer support for Trinidad-Tobago at http://www.acer.com/ac/es/AR/content/service-contact. The phone number is Trinidad y Tobago868-299-0181.

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.

My Acer switch alpha 12 died completely after just 5 months of use. I travel a lot abroad for work, so for an entire month the switch was just additiona weight in my bag. While home for the holidays I got my laptop RMAd. It took 10 days for them to communicate back to me to tell me my screen and SSD drive were dead. No other explanation. Instead of replacing the unit with a new one they repaired it and sent it back to me. Now, less than ONE MONTH LATER, I am experiencing the same exact keyboard problems that you describe.

Their tech support was completely unhelpful and just suggested I return it for ANOTHER RMA!!! I cannot do this as I am now traveling again in SE Asia and need the laptop for my work. Also in the country where I work it is very likely the laptop will be "lost" in shipping.

They have the keyboard available as a accessory in the online Acer Store for $100!!! But I am not about to pay even $1 for something that has broken so many times in so few months.

Acer. If you are interested in supporting your customers who have a warranty and have been loyal customers for many years, send us a new replacement keyboard!

If you are considering buyign this tablet, DONT, you will regret it.
