I purchased model within last week, first thing I had to do is run all software updates,

OS updates done..

Upgrade to PRO as it was stated needed to be able to run Virtual Machine done ..

Driver updates downloaded ..

Acer updates auto ran ..

also seemed to have flashed upgrade BIOS to newest one posted ..

now BIOS is corrupted.

won't boot past bios.

doesn't even start to load windows, shuts off before it gets that far..

noticed after from another pc that the recent BIOS posted is not for upgrades...

also every bios flash program is designed to run in windows..

contacted support in Texas and person had no clue what I was talking about.

he was nice enough to send me the recovery media.

attempted to use... system still gets critical system fault error.

I need a usb media to auto run and re-flash BIOS to correct issue.

the latest version of BIOS for your model is 1.18:

    https://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_1.18_A_A.zip?acerid=636324984988489624&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%20E5-553&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_6

if you are able to boot to BIOS, can you please check if BIOS is set to Legacy or UEFI?

normally is under BOOT tab or security tab.

try to switch from Legacy to BIOS or from BIOS to Legacy and check if it's able to boot.

well I think I resolved it a number of different ways.

you said "try to switch from Legacy to BIOS or from BIOS to Legacy and check if it's able to boot."

the link you posted states it's for "Wind0lt" install.... totally useless if laptop couldn't boot past BIOS.

    - it was set to UEFI.

    - when system was powered down 2 blue lights on front left still active.

    - waited for lights to go out, ( a few days )

    - plugged into wall & booted to BIOS

    - was able to change back to legacy

    - then changed back to UEFI, disabled safeboot.

    - system works now

So thank you IronFly you may not have given me the correct answer but did point me in the right direction.

as a question,  why was it not suggested to simply remove the case cover to expose RAM & HDD ??

that also worked to shut off blue lights so I could enter BIOS without waiting 3 days.

BTW the phone agents are little more that basic users that habitually read from a script.

for better customer service if someone calls in with tech knowledge above their level of understanding then they should have proper access to proper answers. NOT instantly send recovery OS, or set up repair.

As I am not leasing the unit I should be able to open the RAM cover should I choose to upgrade RAM.

that would have resolved my issue faster.

As I have neither the time nor patience for your customer service agents can you please pass along that

    case # **********  & # ********* are closed & resolved.

i posted the link, just ot be sure you flashed the latest version, not to flash BIOS...i read you were not able to boot to OS.

about LEDs activity, you know that you can do a battery reset, so you shutdown your laptop?

ok duly noted about battery reset, wasn't aware of that one ty.

and I was able to resovle issue by going back to legacy.

    thanks again.

So as you're not an employee of Acer, I would hope you can answer why sysino says it's 4 core,

but I can't seem to boot / install any X64 OS asides from default.. is the BIOS crippled or limiting the hardware?

the reason I am asking is I want to run virtual machines,

Virtual Box keeps exiting saying it's disabled and there is no option to enable in BIOS.

need VM's for schoolwork without total system reload.

I have checked in the BIOS and there is no setting for VT-X or anything virtual.

I know Hypervisor is Intel based & won't work on this system.

about x64 OS like linux distro, be sure that the create USB flash drive is with GPT scheme and FAT32 formatted, disable secure boot too on BIOS.

    about Virtualization< check this:

Most of recent Acer laptop models support both Hyper-V and VT-x*, they are both enabled even if those options are hidden on BIOS.

If your laptop has an Intel CPU, you can check if you CPU/system supports virtualization instructions, using Intel Processor Identification Utility:
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/7838

If your laptop has an AMD CPU, you can check if your CPU/system supports virtualisation instructions, using AMD Virtualization™ Technology and Microsoft® Hyper-V™ System Compatibility Check Utility
    http://download.amd.com/techdownloads/AMD-VwithRVI_Hyper-V_CompatibilityUtility.zip

Devices using Windows 10 Home will need to upgrade home to Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise to use Hyper-V. Windows 10 requirements can be found here:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/hyperv_on_windows/quick_start/walkthrough_compatibility

    * If Hyper-V is ON, VT-x will not be available; Hyper-V must be OFF to have VT-x recognised by virtual machines.

    Turn OFF Hyper-V
Open a Command prompt with administrative rights (Admin)
    type
    bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off
    exit

    Reboot your OS

    or

Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features -> click Turn Windows features on or off -> un-check Hyper-V -> click OK

    Turn ON Hyper-V

Open a Command prompt with administrative rights (Admin)
    type
    bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto
    exit

    Reboot your OS

    or

Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features -> click Turn Windows features on or off -> check Hyper-V -> click OK

The system has all hardware & drivers for both OS's to use VT-d. It seems the VT-x isn't enabled in bios as much as loaded in either OS kernel. It's not hardware as much as software that determines use.
So once again you have helped point me in the right direction. Thanks.

The issue isn't the software, it's disabled in firmware ACER BIOS.

there also is no advanced setting within to enable said setting.

I would like to know why Acer locked out that function..

if there is no way to unlock it, what alternative BIOS is compatible with system that actually will allow VT-x..

I'm beginning to think I should exchange this thing for an Asus or a Mac...

Maybe they will allow the features I need.

as for your post about "bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off"

I did that, also enabled & disabled hypervisor tree usin DISM..

again... software and hardware sopport it, firmware does not.

and that's exactly what the AMD VT-x diag app says also.

    An update seems in order.

Bios successfully updated to newest version, still not any advanced menu items.

disabled Hypervisor in W1nd0lt 10 Pro...

uninstalled & reloaded Virtualbox in both OS's

re-configured & recognized IOMMU hardware in both OS's

    microcode drivers also current.

installed all associated packages, tools & DKMS for Virtualbox

    laptop is AMD A12 processor

    ran "AMD-VwithRVI_Hyper-V_CompatibilityUtility"

still states virtualization disabled in firmware

    Even tried following exactly the following thread;

    http://community.acer.com/t5/Legacy-Laptops-and-Netbooks/Advanced-BIOS-settings-for-Aspire-E1-522/td-p/151267

    states permission denied.

tried regedit & hex editors to no avail

so... in short either this laptop was misconfigured, I was lied to by sales & Acer phone support, or you haven't dabled deep enough into this system to know your way around it, yet. As virtualization isn't enabled by default in bios.

Bios is just that... Basic. If the bios doesn't see it, then the hardware doesn't exist as far as any OS is concerned, so it can't be enabled.

I really don't care as I'm not trying to flame you, there's lots of software I don't know how to run. All I want is to get this system working for the premise I bought it.

Hypervisor may be enabled by default on windows, but there is still an area of it that's greyed out, so it won't run anyway.

Please don't take my frustration personally, this laptop has had me asking questions of University Comp Sci Professors and Linux user groups. And I am still not getting an answer. I even sent an e-mail to Insyde asking about the issue and how to resolve it.

The posted pics prove VT-X is indeed STILL disabled, after updating everything, still disabled in firmware. AMD VT-X tool also states disabled. Also had Hypervisor enabled, Virtualbox still didn't run, firmware disabled error.

I would really appreciate some help in resolving this issue.

only Acer can unlock AMD-V by a BIOS update...bu i never seen one that will unlock it.

or you need to search around a bios mod or bios mod community.

I realize that to a large extent your hands are tied as for how far you are allowed to assist customers, I would personally prefer to get a BIOS from the same people that I bought the system from, just makes good business sense. I already know it would void my warranty and am fine with that, knowing I would have to pay all repair & shipping costs. I already came within hours of sending the system in for repair, but was able to resolve that issue. It's a real shame that the features I'm looking for can't just simply be accessed by a few keystrokes in bios. ie. Fn+ tab. there is something to be said about trying to get suppport from supplier. at least if Acer was to make a method available for those that request it people wouldn't have to resort to "mod" sites, or hacker sites. And from what I have found online Acer seems to aim it's systems at the user level, not power user, or hobbyist. another unfortunate decision as there seems to be a few hundred posts about this issue.

      I have tried;

    upgrading the bios,

    downgrading the bios,

    editing NVRAM vars table,

    editing boot options,

    enabling/disabling Hypervisor,

    requesting bios from Insyde,

    and still Virtualbox doesnt work.

I just want to be able to use the system to it's claimed full potential, currently it's not as fast as claimed, I can't even monitor the fan, or CPU temp. Something I'm used to being able to do to monitor the safety of the system.

I hope there is some path for you to submit this up the chain to get corporate to look into.

I feel like I paid for a new Porche Carrera and got a V-W beetle.
