My Aspire M5 481PT loses audio when I run an HDMI cable to my television.

First of all, I have checked the HDMI cable, the television, and the volume on both the computer and television.

When I plug the HDMI cable into the television my Spotify account immediately says "There is a problem with your soundcard" and I can not get audio to play through any other program. I have re-installed the sound card driver, and am at a loss at this point. Thios laptop worked great for watching movies on my television for the first few weeks, then it just stopped. I haven't installed any additional software that I think could account for the problem, and the television and cable are the same ones that worked just a few days ago. If someone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Once you are hooked up to the TV on HDMI, right click the little speaker icon.  From there, select "Playback Devices".  Once in there, right click again and make sure you have "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" checked.  You should now see your HDMI TV somewhere in there.  Set it as default and see if this helps.  I just went through this about an hour ago and learned how to fix my problem.
