Predator 17X Should not have thermal issues.

There is apparently a lot of issues going on about the new Predator 17X having CPU thermal bottlenecking but this shouldnt be happening because the I7 6820HK in the older model ran just fine, and the new Kaby lake chips basically use up the same amount of Power and produce the same amount of heat as the older Sky Lake models just have a new architecture and the core speed is a bit more. To me it seems like there is a software issue with monitering the heat because I played Watch Dogs 2 for 1 hour+ while overclocking it to Turbo, the CPU temp supposedly jumped to 95C+ While the GPU stayed under 75C :/

But I did notice the CPU temp going from 96C to all of a sudden 78C and it kept jumping back and forward even with it being on a different moniter(So I wasnt Alt+Tabbing in and out which could cause this) And any part of the device I touched didnt feel warm at all, it felt more cool than my older laptop that had a 960m with an I7 6700HQ

At first I thought that this was a Predator Sence issue so I called and Acer told me on how to press that button that simulates taking the battery in and out(Ive never done it Smiley Tongue)

That didnt really help though :/

Soooo..... In conclusion I think that this whole CPU issue might be an issue with monitering the new Intel chips(This is a theory not 100% sure) That is why changing the voltage or adding new thermal paste didnt help with much.

Did your model with the 6820 have the triangle shaped cooling system for the CPU? I have the 17x 7820hk and the triangle shape cooling setup could be a big part of the problem.

My friend had the 6820HK model, and I didn't check but I'm pretty sure it's the same. The Razer Blade Pro has the exact setup for the cooling but it's a 6700HQ. It's thinner as well which means that it won't cool things that well but the thermals are fine for it being basically the same setup.

And I recently used MSI's Afterburner to get the temps in game, and it's the same issue. It goes up 90C and the jumps backwards to 78C and it keeps doing that. The highest it has gone when jumping back was 80C. I think that temp reader freaks out when the CPU is load because playing basic games like Minecraft with shaders stays at a toasty 70C but as soon as I play a more demanding game, the temps jump back and forward. I think that when the temps jump back, it's showing the actual temperature.

Try playing a demanding game for 30 mins and compare the "warm to the touch" difference towards another gaming laptop with the same game.

I don't have one of those inferred heat measurer thingies so if you have one, use that.

(If none of my examples work) ship back computer and let Acer attempt to fix it.(let me know the results if you do that)

i have the same issues with my Predator 17X. the 7820HK CPU gets up to 96C while the 1080 GPU only gets a max temp of 79C under heavy load. After repasting with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut i barely see any difference. Also, i had a void sticker on one of the screws of the heatsink, already deteriorated by screwdriver before i even touched anything, laptop being bought brand new from local store. Poor quality control might i say. If something would have went wrong with the internals and i would have been forced to send it in for repairs, my warranty would have been canceled without me even touching anything. Thanks, Acer

Technically void stickers shouldnt mean anything, by law, you dont "void" the warrenty unless if you damage the product. Give Acer a call and tell them that you wouldve had no idea that opening it up would "void" your warrenty since there was no warning, they have fixed my computer for free and upgraded the HDD to 2TB when it was originally 1TB(I only payed $50 for shipping)

I found out that the CPU does acutally overheat with one of those laser things that you point at an object and you get the temps(I forgot the name xD)

But... I do think that this might be a defect with some Intel Core I7 7820HK processors, I just use it to the max speed and if the laptop dies from heating up... Im covered for 2 years Smiley Very Happy

But give them a call ASAP, you might get your warrenty back :/

in the warranty manual it is stated that ANY modification to the product besides the user accessible area leads to warranty void. i live in Europe, so nobody cares about us. manufacturers only want they product to last just the warranty period, after that, we can go **bleep** ourselves. i'm tired of whining about this issue on such an expensive product. i was planning on using it at least 3 to 5 years. after that, nobody would buy a second hand product with such temperatures so i could upgrade to a newer one with the same issues and going over and over again

If you bought it from Amazon, get a refund. I returned my older laptop on which I had for 3+ months because the keyboard and overall quality was bad.(It was the Aorus X7 v6)
