One 10 S1002 Screen Blank after Windows 10 Update

Hi,

I have an issue with my Acer One 10 S1002. Today it installed a Windows 10 update, after it had restarted for the first time it continued to install the updates, then at the next reboot the screen has remained blank. Even the BIOS splash screen does not show.  Although the screen is blank the backlight switches on and even a USB drive will appear to read when plugged in.

I've tried a full power off, and tried to get it into the BIOS setup by holding volume up and power, but the screen never displays anything, this is presenting like a hardware issue, but has anyone else experienced something similar as it appears to have been triggered by an OS update.

Thanks,

Completely power down again. Then try the power + volumeup routine again but for a longer time or till the bios menu appears. Then exit the bios. Report back with results. Jack E/NJ

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've tried again, the BIOS still doesn't appear after 2 minutes of holding the buttons although I did it in a darkened room and noticed the backlight did come on after around 40 secs. But nothing appeared on the screen.
I've done some further investigation and with a cable hooked the device up to an external monitor. The system works fine on the external monitor, but the internal display is still blank, doesn't matter what screen output setting in windows the internal display is blank. I also tried accessing the UEFI screen using the windows recovery dashboard but once the device reboots the internal screen remains blank and in this case also the external display is blank. To me this looks like a hardware failure of the internal screen.

Since this happened immediately after a Win10 update, I'd be more tempted to think the control panel power profile settings and thus connected standby feature got screwed up. If you can still access control panel thru an external monitor, you might wanna see if you can change the power settings so the screen never shuts off. Then completely power down. Then cold boot again and hope for the best. Report back with results.    Jack E/NJ

    Hi,

I've tried your suggestion this evening and no luck I'm afraid. Even with all power saving settings as 'Never' the internal screen would not come on. I've also tried resetting the BIOS to default by working out that the BIOS was open and pressing F9, ENTER, F10, ENTER I've even tried reinstalling the graphics driver. But I'm still at the same position with no internal screen working.  I'm just trying a reset of windows as a last ditch attempt.

    Thanks,

Yes, that's a possibility. There are other "last ditch attempts". But i think I like your's better right now. And before discussing or trying any of that kinda stuff, how about first searching in control panel for a "restore point" to see if any automatic restore points are listed by the WinUpdate app with a date/time stamp. You might be able to restore the system to a point immediately before the last update. Jack E/NJ

    Hi,

I checked 'System Restore" and it is not enabled so there are no restore points.  The Reset completed overnight and I now have the device back to factory settings, but the issue still remains. Given I've completely reset the OS and reset the BIOS to default I cannot see how this is a software error, unless the BIOS itself is corrupt. is there anything else I can try or shall I look at trying a warranty claim with Acer?

      Thanks,

Well, since you already did your last-ditch re-set, I guess it's OK to bring up one of the other last-ditch options that I hesitated to mention cuz I really don't like it. If you haven't done so already, go to ---  http://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers --- Enter S1002 in the box. Then check the available BIOS updates. The only BIOS version I really like is the one that's already on your machine because it worked before with your graphics adapter. And it works now with an external TV. You may disagree. But I suppose it's remotely possible the WinUpdate could've somehow corrupted the BIOS. Andd you might wanna give one of the updates a whirl if you're adventuresome. But before you make any BIOS update decisions ---  is the machine still under warranty? Jack E/NJ

Yeah, I had nothing I was precious about on the device so thought I could give it a go.

Yes the machine is still under warranty, it was purcahsed in June last year. So I'm tempted to go down that route now. As like yourself I'm not keen on messing around with the BIOS unless there's a clear possibility it will fix the issue and I'd already checked that I am on the current latest version.

Then I wouldn't mess with it any more. You gave it a good shot. So give in to your temptation without delay. Tempus fugit --- it's almost June again! Jack E/NJ
