Hello,

I have wireless keyboard KBRF36211 and wireless mouse associated with an AIO.

There is a dongle for connecting to the computer.

I have recently changed batteries of the keyboard, but thereafter the keyboard is not connecting to the laptop at all, though the mouse is still working.

I understood from one of the forum replies that the keyboard needs to be reset on its PCB.

I have opened the keyboard but dont find the any reset on the PCB.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Double check battery voltage and try cleaning KB battery holder contacts.  Jack E/NJ

    Hello Jack,

The batteries are new, so no problem there.

But the keyboard does not get recognized by the laptop at all.

What is the voltage output of the new batteries? Are they NiMH, NiCad or alkaline? What brand & size?  Were the battery holder terminals inside the keyboard cleaned?

If the battery voltage is proper and terminals clean, does device manager show any issues? Did you get an instruction manual, sheet or label with the keyboard on how to properly initialize when changing batteries?

    Hello Jack,

The batteries are Energizer AAA alkaline batteries and are new. They are also inserter properly.

I don't have a multimeter to measure the voltage, but they are working on other instruments so I guess their voltage must be as prescribed = 1.2V

Yes the battery holder is pretty much clean, so I dont think there is a connection problem.

The Device Manager did show the keyboard earlier, along with the mouse. I'll try to check this part again, if required. But as of today, only the mouse is detected but not the keyboard.

I really dont have a manual for the steps required to change the batteries or resetting the board within, if any.

So any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Yes, this Device Mgr info is needed! Just click on Programs/Files and search for Device Manager. We need this info to proceed. Jack E/NJ

PS: New AAA alkaline batteries should be 1.6v. They are nearly discharged if less than about 1.25v

    Hello Jack,

sooty for the delay as I have been busy due to lots of office work.

i just checked now. The moment I connect the USB dongle to the laptop, both the Mouse and keyboard are seen in the Device Manager. Btw, this is even without turning on the mouse for e.g.

And the moment I turn the power for the mouse on, I can see it working on the laptop, but not so for the keyboard.

so what could be wrong ?

Leave Device Mgr open so you can see it on the screen. Turn off or remove batteries from both the mouse & keyboard and keep them off.  Now, what happens to Device Mgr when you remove, then re-insert the dongle with both the mouse and keyboard off?  Jack E/NJ

    Hello Jack,

I just checked now as per what you've mentioned.

if the USB dongle is not inserted, then the Device manager does not show any mouse nor keyboard.

but when the USB dongle is inserted, the Device Manager shows HID compliant mouse and keyboard. This is despite both of the mouse and keyboard being powered off.

and the moment the mouse is powere on, it starts working i,e. It's movements are detected.

but no so for the keyboard.

    so any clues ?

Now do the same thing. Open Device Mgr. Pull dongle out. Turn both mouse & keyboard OFF. Insert dongle again. Then only turn keyboard ON. Keep mouse OFF.  What happens then?

    Hello Jack

Firstly, the keyboard does not have an on/off switch. But that is fine. I just removed the batteries.

And when I insert the USB dongle, with the keyboard batteries off, mouse off, I still see drivers of both in the Device Manager.

Of course, when the USB dongle itself is not inserted, none of the drivers are seen. So in that sense the dongle insertion into laptop is important for the drivers to be seen.

Next, if I insert the batteries of the keyboard and still keep the mouse off, I do not see any characters on the screen. The mouse is still off.

I think this is problem of the keyboard being unable to connect with the dongle. i.e. something on the keyboard circuitry (probablty the reset part) which is preventing the communication to the dongle.

With the mouse still OFF, and the keyboard still ON, do any of the hotkey combos work? For example, does CRTL-ALT-DEL bring up a task choice window? Does the TAB key move the icon highlighter around? Any response at all from any of the keyboard keys?

If still no keyboard response, I still must suspect some kind of a battery issue because of your description of how this problem started in your very first post. If you haven't tried other batteries yet, please do so. if not the battery itself, It could be the spring contacts inside the keyboard battery compartment have somehow lost their connection to the KB circuit board.

    HEllo Jack,

No, none of the keys be it character or Win, Ctrl, Alt or Function keys - none of them work at all.

The batteries are really new, so I dont think they are problematic at all. The batteries work when inserted in other devices like alaram clock or toys etc.

As regards the keyboard itself, again I dont see issues when I press any. None of them is stuck nor that any key behaves erractically etc.

Is there any wireless sniffer that will sniff what is being sent from the keyboard to the dongle and then print the sniffed traffic into some file or console ? That will help us know if the keyboard is really communicating to the dongle or not. That will also help to know if the keyboard is dead or not.

FInally, is there a way to reset the circuit inside the keyboard itself ? I had read in one of the Acer forums that reset needs to be done once change in batteries is done. Maybe that was applicable to another model. So is that applicable for this model as well ? ANd if so, how to do that ?

Can you see an LED light up or flash on the dongle when you plug it into the computer? If not, does a new icon appear on your taskbar or show hidden icon taskbar? Jack E/NJ

    Hello Jack,

Sorry, I dont see any light or anything on the dongle. There never was one, as I dont see even if the mouse is working. I think the RF module uses 2.4 GHz, so no way human see can see that.

As regards any icon in the taskbar, there was never was one even when the keyboard was working.

I think it is fine, lets forget this altogether.

I just bought a new wireless mouse and keyboard together. They are different models altogether.

And the new keyboard was not working intially but is working now. So lets close this topic altogether.

    Thanks for your help.

OK Sachin. Sounds like the best way to go. Out of curiosity, do you see any new icon in the taskbar or hidden taskbar  with the new hardware? Thanks. Jack E/NJ
