Acer Aspire V5-122P BSOD's
I am helping someone providing technical support for an Acer Aspire V5-122P. He purchased it at the start of 2014, it came with Windows 8, then I updated it to 8.1. At the end of last year, I upgraded it to Windows 10 (even though the official support page for that model did not list any drivers for Windows 10). The problems began in February, randomly, the laptop would freeze now and again, mostly while browsing with Firefox and watching videos.
I did a Refresh in March, and after tried to update the drivers with Driver Booster (as there were no drivers listed for W10.) The computer wouldn't boot into Windows afterwards, so I did a System Restore in Safe Mode, which restored the system to working order.
I did another Refresh in May, as it was being erratic again, this time I ran a HD Check, which passed, and a did a chkdsk /r. The file system corrected some errors.
By July, the system still behaved erratically, so in July, I did another chkdsk /r, which corrected system errors.A week later, a BSOD occurred, DEVICE_DRIVER_NOT_THREADED. Looking this message up, one of the suggestions was updating the AMD graphics driver. Because Driver Booster made the system unstable before, I ran the AMD Auto-Detect Utility, and it told me there wasn't an updated driver for Windows 10!
Everything seemed fine when he started using Edge, but then yesterday, I got a call, saying it was going slowly.
The DEVICE_DRIVER_NOT_THREADED BSOD had occurred again, pointing to atikmdag.sys, dxgkrml.sys and ntoskrnl.sys. I uninstalled and reinstalled the graphics driver, but this did not make any difference.
The stats:
Acer Aspire V5-122P with W8 (upgraded to 10)
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
AMD Radeon HD8210
Any suggestions?

Did you ever update the bios to the latest?

The current graphics drivers kill the V5-122P (still waiting on ACER to provide a fix, as it essentially renders the laptop useless and it's only a couple of years old).
Unloaded the graphics driver and disabled the download of drivers in Win10.-

(though this sometimes still downloads the drivers unfortunately).
You can get old graphics drivers from somewhere but that looks like a bit of a pain to get them installed.

No; as there are no drivers listed for Windows 10, I couldn't!

So, are you saying for the time being, he has to put up with using the basic graphics driver built into Windows?

The link below is about a missing DVD (which is unrelated to your problem), but it also explains how to update the crimson chipset/AHCI driver package for AMD computers for Windows 10.

Thankyou for the link, but that didn't work! I have now reverted back to installing the AMD drivers for Windows 8.1, which work fine. The only trouble now is some videos are pixelated! I really wish this would be sorted, and that, as the Aspire V5-122P doesn't list any drivers for W10, I hope they bother to bring drivers out!

AMD QuickStream Error, The license information for this software is not found!

Your computer is not on the list as being compatible with Windows 10 Anniversary.

The link below explains how you can clean install Windows 10 TH1 or Windows 10 TH2 or Windows 8.1 or get Acer factory media.
Edit: When your computer is stable, make sure you have the latest BIOS 2.12 as per Philetus post.

The Anniversary Update went on automatically, which, as you said it would, really screwed the system up! I took it off, and it was fine!

ok sounds good.
I didn't realize that Microsoft forces Anniversary. If you still have problems or have problems in the future, you may have to clean install Anniversary or go back to Windows 8.1. You can try Microsoft's media creation tool if necessary. Make sure you back up your important personal files and hopefully you already have a USB factory default recovery drive. You'll have to read through my post to get tips on how to clean install Anniversary (if necessary).
I made a false assumption that Anniversary was optional. oops!

Thankyou, I may contact Acer or AMD directly (if I can!) to see when they are going to release a driver that does not screw it up! However, the W8.1 graphics driver works fine so it doesn't matter that much.

I very foolishly didn't make any Recovery Discs for him when he first got the system! The 8.1 graphics driver worked for a while and then yesterday he reported back to me that it was slow again and freezing. I uninstalled the driver and software and left him with the basic Windows graphics driver which seems to be working fine.

There's three different options of getting Windows 8.1 back on there if you decide that's what you want to do.
Option1: Order your original Acer OEM factory recovery media from Acer Store.
https://store.acer.com/en-us/extended/recovery/
Option2: Install vanilla Windows 8.1 and then get your drivers from Acer downloads.

Option3: This option is a longshot. It probably won't work. But you can try it. You can try the Alt + F10 factory reset method.

Thankyou. I will try that ONLY if the laptop starts bisbehaving again! I think it is better that it works properly with the basic W10 graphics driver than the AMD one.
As the Acer recovery disks are £50, alternatively I could buy a W8 (or 10) licence and download the drivers from the AMD page.

I don't understand why you would buy a Windows 8 or Windows 10 license since you already have them. It doesn't make any sense to me.

If you're not real computer savvy, it might be time to take it to a computer shop or have a tech savvy friend look at it. It can be tricky to get Windows 10 working properly on some Windows 8 computers. If you're not real computer savvy, it can take up lots of your time that I'm sure you'd rather be doing other things.
Good luck.

Thankyou. I see what you mean - anyway I shall monitor it, and if it aint broke, I wont fix it (graphics-wise)

Ok sounds good. Just wanted to make sure you know you have other options (free options).

I appreciate that. He himself did think of getting a new laptop but just for this one problem, I don't think it's worth it.

Don't forget about philetus' post. Make sure you have the latest BIOS.
To find your current BIOS version:
1. Right click on the Windows Start button in bottom left corner of your screen
2. Left click on Run
3, type msinfo32
4. click ok

It only randomly freezes when the driver is installed, which is why John rang me to say it had frozen randomly again. On a restart, or Startup, Windows had tried to install the driver again. So, I found out how to tell Windows not to install driver updates, I rebooted, it booted fine (it didn't before) and it no longer freezes. Hope it lasts!
